How many OTO's will should I put?

Hey guys, I'm making a sales page for a friend and I wish you could help me with some dilema.

I want to put three OTO's on the site, one upsell and two downsells, but I'm affraid it could be confusing or even annoying for the buyers.

For those who master the copywritting skills, how many One time offers you usually put on your pages? how many you recommend?

I'm looking foward for your advice.

please help!

  • It's tough to say, there isn't a "hard and fast" rule.

When I work with a client now we typically get the first sale then use one click upsells for the other OTOs AFTER the intial sale--that way you don't lose the first sale on the upsell.

For downsells it works well to do the downsell when they abandon or otherwise choose to not buy.

My current WSO gives away an awesome freebie then does a gentle upsell. You can see how I did it by clicking here (shameless self promotion.)

After I pay for my product, I want to get it. I can tolerate a OTO, but by the time I get to the second and beyond, I am getting more pissed at each and every one. You would be better off to send me an email with the succeeding offers. I don't have a lot of patients when you get between me and the product I bought with your sales pitches. And if you are trying to build a relationship with me so I will buy from you again, you are off to a bad start with multiple OTOs.

i definitely agree here. It's one thing to do a OTO after I've purchased but if you keep trying to sell me several times after I've said "no thanks" then I will almost be inclined to request a refund of the original product. To me that just shows desperation and a lack of respect for the customer. By all means, offer your other up sells, down sells or whatever in later emails but for now, let me get to the product I just bought.

I agree. I should have been more clear.

When I am working with a client who wants to do multiple upsells, we give them the prospect the option of either accepting or declining the upsell. If they decline, they are taken to the download. If they accept, they are shown a further upsell.

Another option we have used is to create a page that has a number of possible upsells after the sale all on one page. This can work well provided the upsells are not high priced items compared to the initial purchase.

They are called "one time offers" for a reason. I personally am ok with one oto maybe 2, But if you do more than that I feel you are doing more harm than good.

One OTO is just fine. You may add a popup screen saying "Are you sure?" if they hit "No Thanks" just to give that subtle second chance, but that's it. (I really do mean "Are you sure?" though - none of the desperate WAIT YOU'RE MISSING OUT ON THE CHANCE OF A LIFETIME crap.)

Someone who may have been interested in your offer accidentally clicked on the "No Thanks" button and would actually appreciate that second chance. If they hit "Yes I'm sure" though, don't do anything else, just give them their product.

Keep offering OTO's until the customer stops buying them!

Never decide for the custoemr that they should stop buying from you, let them make the decision on their own.

This does not mean that you should keep them "trapped" but you should keep selling as long as they keep buying.

It also helps to do a "pre-up sell" (before the check out) and a "post-up sell"(afer the check out is complete)

I agree with Amy more on both downsells and upsells. As long as you're offering something of real value and relevant to your original offer, your upsells and downsells will be more well received.

Just because some may dislike it doesn't mean you should alienate others who do want it.

Here are quick figures from one of my sites last month. Of the total sales I made on OTOs, this is the sales breakdown:

      1st OTO - 16.6%
      2nd OTO (or 1st downsell) - 20%
      3rd OTO - 63%

So basically if I had stopped at the first OTO when someone said no, I lose out on 83% of the sales I made last month from this one site.

If I stopped at the 2nd OTO, I lose out on 63% of the sales.

And of course, a lot of this is dependent on your ability to create a compelling offer.

I offer my OTO's on the download page. If someone pays for something you should RESPECT THAT AND GIVE IT TO THEM.

If you annoy me I won't buy from you again. I won't promote or recommend any of your products. I won't remain on your mailing list. You'll never get anything from me again.

If you make me jump through hoops to get what I already paid for I can only assume you do not value me as a customer, you only value my ability to pay. In my book, that's disrespect.

And yes, offering an OTO on the download page, after the download, does work. If you create a good offer, it works quite well.
