using google adwords.. for promoting iPhone apps

Would this work? I have a niche iPhone application (a virtual strobe tuner for musical instrument). Costs $2.99.

I get the feeling google ads are only worth going through if your product costs a bit more.. is that true?

It could be pretty tough to make a profit
with a sale of $2.99 running adwords
    in Google search.

But you might be able to make something
in the Google content network if you can get the
.01 clicks. A 1% conversion would still give you
    $1.99 profit.

    That's a lot of work for $1.99.

Have you thought about selling something for more money?

Here is another thought. I was reading
some very old emails (2002) the other day and
I came across a series from Ad Minder.

They where talking about buying exit traffic.
You approach sites with lots of traffic that
have the type of customer you are looking for
and you put up an exit pop.

Today you could use something like Exit Splash.

The site gets money from people leaving and
    you get traffic.

Maybe it doesn't work anymore I don't hear anybody
    talking about it.

    Just a thought.

I see, so even 1% is actually hard to get huh..

Now I finally understand the reason people charge $7+ for iPhone apps.. heh.

Okay, what if I move the price tag up to $10 and provide additional features? At what point will google adwords actually yield you profits?

There are a lot of variables in the equation.

The biggest one being what is your cost per click?
Which depends on your keywords and the number
of bidders on those keywords and a number of other
      factors.

Also you can't just raise the price of a product to meet your
advertising costs. Do you know if that app will even sell?
Then will it sell for $10.00?

I am not trying to be a jerk, just trying to lay it out.

I run a lot of adwords campaigns and I don't sell any
thing for less than $50 many things are into the 100's of dollars.

I just got an email from a guy that is doing a 90
minute adwords seminar for $7 I'll send you a pm with
the link. I don't know if I can post it year, you never
know what the forum police will do.

By the way I am not saying that you will only get a 1% conversion
I used that to be worst case and to make a point.

Ah I see.. You are absolutely right that there are a ton of variables involved, just wanted to know the actual point where google ad words become effective. I still have a tonload to learn about internet marketing..

Generally what is the conversion range (as in, what's the worst that you've heard, and what's the best you've heard) when using PPC ad methods, and compared with CPM?

Maybe I should see if there's any newbie tutorials in the war room.. I did pay for it after all :>

My initial thought is why not try advertising with a google mobile campaign? I have an iphone and I do searches all the time on iphone apps...I've run a number of mobile campaigns and I get low CPC and for certain offers high conversions..i could see this doing well with mobile campaign.

x2 on this... it can be really worthwhile..

Although, I think we are planning a much different route with our apps promotions.

Connecting with people on social networks, and the places they hang out first.. iPhone users are everywhere. Connect with them, and they will naturally find your app.

If you could get on the content network though at 1Cent per click you could potentially make a lot of money. Becuase your earnings will end up balancing out to where your cost will be lower than your earnings and a nice commission would be made.

    Hey underthesun,

I would definitely look into a mobile ad campaign as Brittany suggests above.

You could also look into alternate advertising networks. Depending on your niche, Facebook has some great demographic filters and less ad competition (lower bids) for now.

Also you can run CPM ads on Facebook and other networks where you pay by the impression - depending on your ad and landing page this can yield some great conversions.

    Cheers,
    Kris
