Gday Warriors,

How do you get your links to work when you convert your ebook to PDF?

For some reason the anchor texts look like links, but they are not live.

Thanking you in advance.

  • Use Adobe Acrobat PRO 9 (or equivalent). If you are using a (free) method of printing a to a PDF printer, they will not make the links live (because the software believes you are trying to print to a printer).

I use Adobe, but I think you get live links
      when you use Open Office.

Thanks for the link, however it does not convert image links. I inserted a BUY button into a doc file (with the link to my shop) but this link gets stripped off.
I wonder how to work around this.

BTW I have MS Word 2007 and you can directly use "Save As" to save the doc file as a pdf. The text anchor links also remain intact (unlike some other converters)---however the image links do not work in the pdf.

If you are using MS Word / PowerPoint or Open Office you can insert hyperlinks in the document, they will look like and more importantly would be live links and perfectly clickable when you convert the document to PDF. But you need to have Adobe Acrobat for that. Acrobat also has extensions for MS Office (Word, PowerPoint etc.). However these are paid solutions.

Now let's see if we can do it using free tools. Well, it turned out to be quite easy. Go to Google Docs and create a document there which have hyperlinks in it. You can also upload your documents if you wish.

From the File menu select Download As and finally select PDF. Save the PDF file to your hard disk. Open it and you will find the link is live.

I have an example for you.

This is the document I created -
      Code:
      http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddhpbxm5_0d27mtrcq
And you can view / download the PDF (which I uploaded back to Google docs for sharing) converted by Google Docs

      The PDF -
      Code:
      https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B9AJl-oqPzR2ZmIyYWNkNmItZTFjNi00Nzc4LWEwYjItNWU2MTQyMzdkNDhm&hl=en

The links are live (when you download the file) in the PDF. Now you can play around a bit with formats and designs to get the desired result.

For some unknown reason (probably related to security) the link does not appear to be live in IE8 but it works perfectly in Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

I use open office. Make the links live in open office and then export to .pdf and BAM! your links are live in pdf.
