My Internet Marketing experience 3 years Later

Warriors!

It has been close to 3 years now and I have a ton to look at in retrospect when it comes to internet marketing. Over the years, I have bought a ton of courses online. I wanted to learn as much as I can about Internet Marketing. I mean EVERYTHING.

This is what I have learned over these years.
  • Email Marketing (List Building and Autoresponders)
  • SEM,PPC,PPV (Pay Per Click) (Pay Per view)
  • Blogging (Wordpress)
  • Social Media (Facebook,Twitter,Myspace)
  • CPA Cost Per Action/Acquisition)
  • Dropshipping/Ebay Selling Products
  • Article Marketing (Bum Marketing)
  • Video Marketing
  • SEO/Traffic Building (Search Engine Optimization)
  • Copywriting and Basic & Advance concepts.
I wanted to be well rounded in about everything. Over the last couple of years and many test domains/campaigns later. I decided to start opting out of all most of my lists and staying with only a few who provide the best marketing advice ever.

I have made several thousands of dollars just by listening and reading some of the auto responders. I think everyone should set up a opt in email account somewhere and opt in to some of your favorite marketers or people you like the most and compare all the different styles of writing.

Anyway, this is not about the who's who in internet marketing in my honest opinion. This is about where I really made the most money online.

I took the approach with the idea of using the least amount of money possible. (Except for Paid traffic.)

Luckily, I work as a Network Engineer for a big Telecommunications company monitoring the voice and data network for stability and vulnerabilities. This is where I funded my internet marketing courses to learn.

I wanted to experience every aspect for making money online.I did it from the aspect if I had no money no income just a laptop and a internet connection.

Some areas I did suck at and didn't make money in that area. Due to the fact of not having the time nor desire to keep with the certain money making tactic.

Article Marketing

Article writing is a awesome way to build money online and at first I was making quite a bit of money just through articles. But my will to keep it up started to fade fast. I made several hundred dollars off of my articles.

Article Marketing Tip*
One cool thing I started to do that I noticed a ton of article marketers don't do is on the articles that are paying out on a certain "keyword" build back links to them! It keeps the article ranked in the search engines. If you notice your articles fading in SERP (Search Engine Results Page) build back links. It does'nt even need to be a lot.

PPC,PPV

I have yet tackled the beast to be totally profitable. But I truly think that the use of paid traffic can bring money to you in ways you will never know. I messed up and want to save you from my mistakes.

(As I finish typing this I am working to start a new venture in PPC. I lost over 1000 in a couple of days for not knowing what the hell I was doing. A landing page with great quality score is the way to go.)

Some tips I suggest learn how to apply demographics to your campaigns. A 40 year old lady may not be your target market for "Lil Wayne" Ring tones offers.

If using Google learn to use the Adwords Editor and learn about how to use Excel and CSV sheets. CSV (Comma Separated Value)

Learn about cognitive keyword searching. Know what people type when they are just investigating or price matching compared to pulling their wallets out and buying. If you can master that you can make massive money with PPC and any other internet marketing endeavors.

Use tracking software (Prosper 202) and how to loop all your keywords back to the software to track what is profitable and what is costing you money. Don't be gun shy to lose money sometimes in this area.

Blogging

My favorite area,I love blogs especially Wordpress! Wordpress can be used to dominate the search engines. They can be used as Squeeze page, Landing pages, Membership sites and much more.

The power of a blog I can't express in this post.

It can be configured to dominate any keyword competitor out there and get you massive exposure online. Some of the biggest companies like Best Buy use Wordpress for their Site.

When targeting your blog posts get a list of keywords you want to target and place ads or links to affiliates that relate to the post category you are writing about.

The use a keyword sheet separated by commas and lost several of them in the tag section of Wordpress.

Always configure your Wordpress blog with permalinks custom structure
/%postname%/ Each post is a money maker. Remember this!!

Email Marketing

Build your landing pages like was selling a product. This should be your most important copywriting skills ever.

You want to build a list and treat them with care.

I see a ton of marketers using the same old boring templates 3 affiliate links and template all the time. Each email they are selling you.

This may work great for some people and niches. But I think for the internet marketing niche you need a loyal cult following.

A marketer whom I respect and learn from every day is Jason Moffatt this dude has a small list but converts mad sales due to his honestly and loyalty to his subscribers.

He is just himself and sends out emails with cool videos and tips that can make money.

He really wants to see people on his list succeed.

He recommended a product that made him money one time and I took his advice and made a couple of thousand dollars immediately.

Note: If you make me money I will buy from you if it means clearing out my cookies to do it. But Jason's products for Video sales now The Truth Serum are second to none but his video marketing skills and Social media skill are crazy.

Even Jmo's people on his list are awesome I have made a ton of contacts from his list.

One guy The people's Marketer Kevin Madison whom I met from JMo I am working on a 5k in 2 days deal which will be awesome and probably a WSO in the works.

I don't want to keep going but some other great marketers who have awesome lists. Kim Roach, PotPieGirl,Travis Sago,Andy Jenkins and Howie Schwartz. I opted out of everyone else.

So where to make money. I made most of my money via blog posts and video marketing. But the quickest and largest amount of money I made was from local businesses and helping them get an online presence.

CopyWriting
Simple Study below

A.I.D.A and Boron Letters then John Carlton. That is the best as it can get!

After 3 years, to make the money it boils down to this.
Find a hungry niche that needs something bad to solve a problem or target buy words like product model numbers or product names that people would search if they had a credit card in hand.

If you ever had a unsolicited chance to watch a sale being made in person online it is awesome and you see someone what they typed and what made them pull out the credit card. It will bring so much light to you and you will understand a ton.

But it is simple. Learn to get tons of targeted traffic and drive it to a awesome landing page or a proven affiliate.

Better yet when buying products for your business. Spend it on research products and outsource as much as you can.

My biggest problem has been trying to do it all myself. It is easy to jump around from project to project and get nothing done. It is like herding cats.

Also, if you are not making money look for reason why. Start with yourself. Sometimes you maybe surprised you are the reason.

These are just a few thoughts I hope it helps people. You truly can make money online! Traffic+Desire = Money

Yep... that's where most fail... bees have a place in this world, they flutter around from flower to flower and make delicious honey as well as help the flowers themselves grow.

Bouncing from the latest hot thing to the next without ever implementing everything = fail.

Congrats Shane on your success and your willingness to share.

    Hey Shane, cool post.

I'm curious what have you found by using social media? (myspace, facebook, twitter etc.)

From my experience with it and from talking to a alot of friends using it...

In my opinion it seems social media is overhyped and doesn't really make much money if you're starting from scratch. (Yes I know people will disagree and it's slightly controversial).

From testing and results I've seen, social media isn't very effective when starting out.

The people who seem to do well with social media are already famous in some way. ie. a popular site, been on tv, author etc.

Social media is great for people who already have a following because it allows them to get even more followers.

If you're starting from scratch win my opinion it's not a very effective strategy.

People using it to make money realize it's not a sustainable model and is very inconsistent.

From what I've seen the people who make money from social media are the ones selling information on how to make money from social media.

Anyway that's my conclusion from speaking to insider social media guys and my own testing...

    What are your thoughts?

I'm curious what have you found by using social media? (myspace, facebook, twitter etc.)

I have found the best way to use Social Media is building a list. I think if you are building a list Social media is where it is at.

      Explanation:
Here is the best way I have found.

      Phase 1 Twitter
Twitter: I like to get a following by using several target keywords.
      1. I would then set up a Google Alert and take the RSS feed and put it on Tweetfeed or some service that will Tweet feeds as they come in. i would set it to like maybe 2 Tweets a hour. (This initially helps you build a target following). People like to follow others by searching targeted Tweets of same interest.
      2. Or I would use leverage. Example: I want to target "weight loss". Then I would use leverage of someone like Richard Simmons or another weight loss guru and start followingtheir followers. Set up a auto follow reply that links back to your web site or landing page thanking them.
      3. I also like to use Wordpress plugins that Tweet your recent blog posts. (Once I get a decent following for my niche, I like to taper down the RSS alert feeds tweet to none. You don't want to "harden" your audience to information overload or ignore your tweets.
      Phase 2 Facebook
Facebook is a personal thing and if someone becomes your friend you want to be able to not spam them with blog links or crap to sales pages.

No one on Facebook likes to see tons of Status pitches. Trust me or Pm's asking if they got a sec for them to explain MLM or the next craze in Network Marketing.

The key is to get people added as friends, write free reports and have your Facebook friend link in it. Once someone is your friend, you can have them become a fan of your personal page next once it is created. Now you can at this point have

Twitter update your status on Facebook. (If you Tweet alot sometimes this can be annoying unless you are Tweet cool personal experiences or Pictures.

I think some of the best Facebook pages are the ones who post a Youtube videos links to a song or some really funny video.

(I know one of my friends he likes to use his Cell phone via Twitpic and take pictures of crazy and weird people he sees in Walmart or funny worded signs and posts them on Facebook with a funny comment.)

This shows your personality and keeps people entertained wanting more of your statuses and more importantly YOU. (Wondering what funny stuff he will post next)! You would be surprised with how many people's day you perk up by posting something funny.

You are making your way to them as a person not a sales pitch. (Which is why people like Jason Moffatt rock social media they are just themselves and people dig it). After while, you will see your friends tend to grow more and more.

Then it is time for Phase 3 making a Fan Page or Facebook page. I tend to stay away from being a Fan of Shane Hale and lean more towards pages like Being a Fan of "Finding money in your pocket" or some type of niche related Fan site with a cause.

Unless you are some Guru or celebrity and everyone knows you then nobody wants to become a Fan of you.

It is a turn off basically "Who does this guy think he is".

(I like Funny and creative pages that kind of go hand in hand with your niche).

Then I like to use FBML (Facebook Markup Language) it is a application you can add to your sites to place code on Page. Easy to do just search for FBML application and add it to your page.

Then you can enter Aweber Form code or autoresponder code in the box just like you would add a opt in to your Widget box on Wordpress. Or you can even Iframe a external page elsewhere.

If it is a cool page with a catchy name related to your niche then you will be golden.

You can then advertise via Facebook Pay per click for more fans or simply invite all your friends to become a member of your page that you created.

Think about it... you have been entertaining them with cool posts and videos as well as witty and even helpful statuses. An invite from you to a page that you created or suggested most of the time will be accepted.

Once they join, their friends will see the status and join especially if it is a catchy name or phrase.

Then it will pretty much go viral at that point. Then just continue to post wall updates with useful and informative yet entertaining information.

My experience it is a lot harder to sell on social media sites because it is someone's personal space.

It is similar to inviting someone into their home. Once you let them in they try to sell you Amway or some Vaccum cleaner. (Which I did once the conversion really sucked) lol literally. It is a huge turn off and people are already on the defensive.

Your social media TouchStone you are selling is your persona. And if you provide great content and awesome entertainment on the side you just sold yourself in a matter of seconds.

People will buy from you easier if they like you. Hence the reason someone with a small list can get you huge conversions.

My point is not to portray being a salesman, just be yourself. Talk to your list and treat them like friends. Tell jokes have fun if someone don't like you they can always leave. But the whole point is you are not being fake you are being as real as possible.

So in summary, Social Media rocks when building a list. You just got to be yourself and have fun in order to get the most out of it.

I see so many dry ass statuses of people trying to sell you crap or automated blog posts talking about a launch with their cloak link in it.

Social Media is one of the most Powerful tools when marketing yourself. and most experts do it wrong and that is why they get so frustrated with it.

Then there is sites like Linkedin which I LOVE!!

(Trying not to over post here) Social Media is VERY POWERFUL!

Man, this is soo true look at every marketing guru as a whole look at their sales system and how they sell you and even buy a product from them and look how it is made and look at them outside the box as a whole you will reveal the true system they are using not just what they are selling

PPC is my next mission to really conquer, It is like gambling sometimes you can make a killing if you can get the right landing page and the right offer or niche at the right time. Also, having the right tools to do it is also great. I like to look at competition and see what type of landing page they are using then watch a target set of keywords for about a month.

The ones that stay are the ones making some money. I have been debating just going to Elance and outsource landing pages. I have to learn not to do everything myself.

Keyword grouping is very important!! People make mistakes by rushing in to fast and they create crappy landing pages and use keywords that cost too much. This is where using your imagination comes in and cognitive keyword research comes in to play.

Great post, Shane, with a lot of good information.

However, what I think most impressed me was your example of setting a checkpoint and taking the time for review and introspection. I imagine all of us could benefit from choosing definite point in time--6 months, first year, second year, etc.--and reviewing what we've learned and where we want to go from there.

I look forward to your next analysis down the road.

    Thanks.

I've learned few invaluable lessons. I've learned some of it earlier, and you make it firmer. Backlinks building, profitable keyword research, REAL warriors (I recognized some of names you mentioned, opted in one of them - Kim Roach ), one simple techy tip, and ppc tracking.

    Just great! Thanks.

Thanks guys for all the insight and wonderful comments.

I thought I actually made some people mad about the opt-out thing.

I had people actually leave my list because of it.

To be honest, I even sent a email telling people to unsubscribe. One guy thanked me for telling him how. haha

Here is the thing when it comes to email marketing. Find some people you can connect with. I mean people who relate to you. This is awesome because if any of you ever went through Frank Kern's Mass Control he talks a little about this.

"Modeling" Find someone you like and model yourself around them. Don't get caught up into the hype of the latest and greatest launches.

I do recommend buyer loyalty especially if they are providing good information to you.

(It just helps the laws of karma and reciprocity).

Plus, buying from someone you actually like and connect with helps you understand their sales process.

    (Guru Buster Tip)

Look at the whole picture of what they are doing.

    Now ask yourself these questions.

    1. How did they capture your attention?
    2. What made you opt-in or click?
    3. How have they benefited you in the past?

(This is the reason at first, I was opted into about every Guru email list out there for years).

I would look at their emails by subject. Right when a big launch would come, you could see who was using a affiliate swipe file to the ones who actually put some thought and wrote their own email copy and provided bonuses.

Then sit back and watch their emails and see who actually keeps you entertained in a "non-spammy" way versus the ones who are just sending you a template like this.

[Example:ASswipe file **Warning don't use this as a swipe file due to it being not real and very pitifully done and written lol***]

Subject: Eye catcher topic here Example: I made $9797.97 in 3 hours with this method

    Hey %Firstname_fix%

I wanted to talk about the latest greatest thing Joe Blow put out it is dominating the (insert niche here) it will make you $9797.97 in 3 hours. He totally showed me this and I was blown away after I saw first hand the amount of money that was trickling in his bank.

    (affiliate link)

Man this was awesome, I can't believe how this method blew up my Paypal account.

    (affiliate link)

I was around the other day and couldn't believe my eyes, This guy Joe Blow actually hit the proverbial "fountain of wealth". I was completely amazed by his methods and tactics. COMPLETELY!!

Well, I got to run to Vegas for this high dollar seminar to speak. If you missed out on last email the sits are now filled up. Sorry =(

    PS.

Serious check this dude's method out

    (affiliate link)

    PSS.

    Mad Profits for You,
    Mr. Gary RooH

    <<<END OF ASSwipe file>>>

    (Ok, maybe I went overboard).

However, whenever you see these same email from 50+ so called Guru's it insults me lol.

But, when someone takes the time to lay out why I should buy this product and includes crazy cool bonuses that will benefit me.

Also, they have been sending me mad free tips in the past that actually made me some change.

Hell, I will click their link. Anyway thanks for the comments very much appreciated.

(Maybe I pissed some more people off).

    Sorry for my tangent,

**Note** are heretical opinions of me myself and I.

Maybe, I am a hardened grizzled marketer looking for diamonds in the rough.

Who knows... I try to keep it real and maybe those templates show proven conversions in the past and is the reason you can send it to 16 million opt-ins on a list and get a buy or 20000.

It is the law of numbers really.

(Kind of like those people who help that King transfer the Nigerian lottery winnings over to the USA via their bank account).

There is profitability in numbers!! The Money is definitely in the list!

I just rather have a small list of loyal people who dig me and my information and know I won't send a bunch of crap to them everyday...

Any which way I am humble to your thanks and positive comments!

    Thanks,
    Shane Hale

Good post. The best thing I've learnt is to start off by building a product to sell or give away. It's helped me create a big platform of sites and backlinks that allow me to easily launch all kinds of other ventures.

Article marketing brings in the traffic alright.
Its just so annoying that most of your articles will be crap in terms of bringing in traffic.
The 80/20 rules applies to article marketing as well I guess.

    Shane,
Thank you for your enlightening post. I've been at this for eight months and I am struggling with trying to get my arms around article marketing, trying to see the "big picture." Recently, I opted out of many lists and I have noticed that I have regained my focus. I have stayed on few, like you say, that give me good information. I will check out your book.
    Thanks again,
    Carlos

If you spend 2 hours per day learning a subject for 4 years, you will become the top 1% in knowledge in that niche/market/industry. That's what I have heard.

It's amazing how much knowledge we gain in a few years time. I also have 3 years exp in IM.

Sometimes when people ask how do you make money online... I tell them it is like asking "How to build a home?" to a Civil Engineer.

      Shane,

Thanks for your recap of your ongoing journey to success in online marketing. It reminded me of my own learning process and how much there is still to learn. I, too, found myself subscribed to a plethora of lists and being overwhelmed by the number of emails I received daily. Fortunately, one of the threads here on the Warrior Forum contained some blunt advice: "Stop spending all your time on the Forum and get busy building your business."

I made the classic mistake of thinking I had to 'master' everything before really getting started. In reality, making mistakes while building my business IS part of the learning process, plus I will never master everything. As soon as I accepted the fact that I would make mistakes while building my business and started taking action, I began to experience success, modest though it may have been.

Your advice about finding a select group of mentors you connect with is very apropos. The next step is to quickly "do something with what you learn." Even if it doesn't work out perfectly, each action will move you forward toward your destination.

Again, thanks for taking the time to share.

Wonderful post Shane... You are a good writer
Here I would like to inform Ben, that if you have a proper mindset and a plan, its not difficult to earn money from Internet Marketing (irrespective of your niche)

Shane, I agree and really enjoyed reading your Phase 2 and 3, particularly about the facebook. I too have a facebook group as well as a Fan page, as you will know that I have a different niche altogether. Even though to target the end users (and ofcourse making money), the stuff you have put up here, is perfect. Once again thanks for your posts

Internet Marketing takes time to learn whether you are a techie learning the marketing part. (Like me). Or a Marketer learning some techie stuff. It takes time to master your craft! Thanks for the post!

I sent you a Pm with the link. Just remember one thing about article marketing. You are leveraging their SEO authority. You have to find a not so competitive keyword that is related to your niche or product.

Then, right the article with some awesome content riddled with about 3% keyword density but, leave it open ended with a link in your resource box so you grab their attention and make them wanting to read more.

Thanks for buying the book it has some awesome stuff related to keyword research that I use.

I am probably going to take that down and work on another report about blogging that I will WSO it for like 7 bucks. I want to make the report and add video content to it showing how to set up your blog and use the right keywords ect ect.
