Have you ever gotten a surprise offer for a domain?

Have you ever gotten an offer for a domain via email? I mean an offer including the amount?

I've gotten message like "Would you sell xxxxxxx domain", but never a $ offer like this. The offer is not great, but its almost acceptable. I'm dubious as to the chances there is real money behind the offer. Am I just getting jaded ?

I got an offer once to sell a domain and had pretty good cash behind it. I was stupid and didn't take the offer, and then never did anything with the domain. Wish now that I had taken the cash.

I get offers occasionally, but usually not with an amount. Once I give them a price they always disappear.

Please be careful... There is a long-time scam that has affected many would-be domain sellers. The person making the offer comes across as professional, but once you reply, they will ask you to have your domain appraised at a particular website, because they "want to be sure they get a fair deal". You get the appraisal (at $xx.xx) and then you never hear from them again. They do this to as many domain owners as they can, to collect the appraisal money.

Not saying this is the case here, but beware

There is a scam going on lately where people will send emails offering to sell you a domain similar to one you already have. So keep an eye out for that one too.

I really just don't trust anything I receive in an email anymore unless it is from someone I know

      • hey guys

        here are some tips:

        1. when you get an email asking you if you want to sell your xxxxx.com domain and you do want to sell it replay with an: "yes"

        2. if the person offers you to buy your domain only if you will agree sending it to be appraised in a appraisal company that he want - beware it is a scam. a person who trade with domains- knows how much your domain worth already, he made a research if he is willing to buy and he will need only to pay and get that domain.

        3. when you sure that he is for real and you accept is offer, tell him that willing to sell it only if payment will be made by a escrow company, never accept payments by paypal. you can be scammed

there are some companies that give an escrow service like: escrow.com, sedo.com and more...

and for emails that offer you to buy a domain, i have never heard of someone who get scammed this way, if processed payment through an escrow service, the only thing that must be checked is if the domain owner is really its owner - done by a whois lookup

for further info and if you have any question pm me.

Sounds like good advice. I always reply with "Make me an offer, but I don't usually sell unless it is an above average offer."

I've sold several domains this way too. Usually they were long time readers/subscribers of the site.

I don't think any of mine started out with a dollar amount offer though, I think they were inquiries. You do have to be careful and having really strong intuition helps.

I've sold a few domains unexpectedly and yes, I've even had a few where they wanted me to get an appraisal but if they are offering you a dollar amount before requesting anything else, you have nothing to lose by exploring the possible sale.

    Best of luck to you!

I had someone want to buy a PR4 domain of mine. It was not for sale, they must emailed me. They wanted proof of income. HUH?
I asked how many thousands they wanted to pay, but never got an answer.
Nice little site pulls in about $600-$1000 a year without me ever bothering with it. I should develop it into an actually paying site.

I have had an "out of the blue" offer with a dollar amount. It was from a domain broker on behalf of his client.

He wanted me to list it on sedo and go through escrow which is what we did. It did take a bit longer to complete the transaction this way but it kept everyone comfortable with the sale.

    Take the money and run.

Unless the domain name is for a big project of yours that could make substantial money.. sell it and REINVEST the money in some of your current projects.

Even $1,000 could buy you 100 articles (at $10 an article).
Or a decent amount of clicks in a PPC campaign.
Spend your time pumping them out.. and you'd be making some nice cash..

I just bought a domain last week by emailing the owner of one. It does happen but like you've already been warned, watch out for scams

I was offered $5k for one of my domain names out of the blue (domain name that pretty much just sits there with no site). Course I turned it down because I "feel" the name alone is worth way more...

Just so happens it is a very good domain name that has a very wide range of possibilities.
