Starting Article Directory

If you were starting a site like HowStuffWorks - Learn How Everything Works! or How To Do Things How To Articles & How To Videos

and wanted to build it up with low competition/relative low traffic keyword driven articles,
would it be hard to get writers to submit their articles to you (the benefit to them would be active links in the articles allowed)?

I think it is like with any other website. At the beginning it would be hard to get people to sign up, nobody wants to be the fist one to say or write something.

When we started our article directory about six months ago all the submissions came from article submission services. Now we have done little bit of marketing and authors are slowly starting to sign up. Some of the authors who where submitting articles trough submission services have now signed in directly and edited their profiles and submit directly now.

Once you get your site out there and people are getting to know about it and will see the benefits of submitting their articles to your site then it should gradually start taking off.

So, do you offer a link in the body of the article?

Any other ways you got your site out there?

Do you have any other incentives you offer writers besides links?

Just make sure that if you might have future plans to scale up the domain (other than just an article directory), that you have an out!

Every day I check the obituaries. If I don't see my name there, then I know it's going to be a good day!

Can you elaborate a little more?

I believe you are going to try and grow this site beyond a simple article repository.

If that is the case, you should keep your future directory structure in mind to avoid migration headaches - i.e. moving your directory from the root of the domain to a "Articles" folder or subdomain.

You should also remember that you will be building it into more than an article directory when you are branding the site. The branding you do right now will still be out there in ten years.

Also, make sure that you don't use the article dashboard script. Your best bet would be a script you can configure completely to hide any script footprints.

You have a great domain name that has the potential to soar!!!! I have domain envy. LOL

Good luck and let me know if you need anything!

We do not offer links inside the article body at the moment.
We do promote all the submitter articles trough our extensive social media channels and trough our email list as well. We also bookmark articles to over 50 bookmarking sites and lately we have been working and promoting our RSS feeds and it have had quite a positive effect.
We have expanded our article directory by adding a forum and we try to build a community around it which should have added benefits for both readers and writers.

Yes, if you get a domain name with Articles or Article Directory in it then your options for future use are quite limited. But if you start a project with a mindset that it is going to fail then it is much more likely to happened.

I take it the forum has grown through word of mouth and SEO?

Hard or not, if you add incentives and use the giant database of Warriors you have here, I'm sure you could structure some sort of WSO and offer some sort of promotions for your contributors. While people are always looking for a great place to get backlinks and traffic, you should give them a reason to pick your directory over Ezine. Maybe front page features? Having high PR helps. Some sort of integration with some social networks?

Good luck, this would be an awesome project for an internet marketer!

That is a good idea, I was thinking along these lines as well but for readers, to build a list. It never did occurred to me to have some sort of promotions for people who submit articles.

    Hey Marhelper,

I've started a couple different article directories and had no problems getting them off the ground - and that;s without the help of article submission services. You don't need them to fill your directory with junk articles by the mass-load. And yes, that happens.

And no, I don't have anything against submission services per say, just when they submit quicker then my company can moderate.

Personally, I think you have more control over your own directory when you start off fresh and slow. You can control better by moderating those articles. When they get submitted in mass bulk, that's hard to do unless you have a large staff. The content and what type of directory usually ends up dictating how that directory will do in the long run. You can thank the PLR sellers and Bum marketing for a lot of the bulk submissions.

I did very simple things to market the directories I've owned. I wrote a few articles (not many actually - mabe 10-15) and submitted them to the major directories like EZA, goarticles, etc ... I put the directories in my sig files with a small advert in about 3 active forums, was helpful to people in these forums (which does get people to check out your links in the sigs), and I bought two ad spots on one other directory that had good PR and was active in the SEs. These ads were only up for 2 months.

Believe it or not, my very first directory had over 7000 articles in it within the first 6 months, and I was a bit picky or selective as to what articles were going to be accepted. Trust me on this one - if you want a very good successful article directory that just doesn't become a typical "article depository" or "article farm", you will want to be selective too. You will get better quality articles submitted to your directory eventually, but most of all you will get more people that come by and use your articles on their sites and blogs. When this happens, your links will spread around more and build up.

Hope this helps, and wish you luck with this adventure ...

Well said. I do use submission services to receive articles and it has helped me to get it going. I have to agree that the amount of rubbish they send trough is astronomical and it can be time consuming to moderate them before I can publish them. But I have also received some really good articles from submission services and I do think they will help you to get it off the ground.

If you have article directory on a small niche, then you can select only articles under certain category to be sent to you so you would not get swamped under loads of articles.

Yes, they are all still up and running, and they are doing very well from what I see. I used no incentive really, but the usual - I offered authors a place to post their content, and ezine publishers, and site and blog owners a place to get good content to publish.

And yes, I started with brand-spanking new domains without PR.

Actually, I just started another directory this week but it isn't open to the public yet. This directory is the first one where I used an aged domain.

Btw, I got your PM, and responded. Hope it helped.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.
