use of hyphens in 'sniper'-style domain names?

quick question:

does anyone have first-hand experience with using hyphens
in 'sniper'-style domain names?

I notice quite often domains with very little PR/backlink juice
ranking in high PR/backlink neighbourhood when the domain
name is the *exact* keyword -- does this also work for
the exact long-tail keyword with added hyphens in between
the individual words -- or am I better off adding a 'the','site',...
to the beginning/end when .com/.net/.org are taken?

Cheers

Veit

    Hello sir!

From what I can tell, as long as the keyword is in the domain name somewhere, it will be OK.

Regardless if you split the words up with hypens or not.

And if you want to do something like the-gas-grill-review.com, that is perfectly fine as well because the keywords are still in there.

    Regards,

Yes, it does. I have several, some even with 2 hyphens.

The approach I take is to only use them when the target keyword domain(s) are parked, undeveloped or tainted. For example, redwidgets.com/.org/.net/.info/.us are all being held by a domainer who wants a ridiculous amount for them. So, I buy red-widgets.com or whatever.

Other than that, I develop them like I do any other domain with relevant content and good links.

I'd like to see how this pans out. I don't see many of those hyphen domains in the top 10 results so I've always tried to stay away as they don't seem to rank.

I've also heard it said that google penalises you for using hyphen. All this is rumour and speculation so i believe it about as much as I believe a tabloid newspaper story but it's planted enough doubt to make me shy away from them.

If you do go for it would you be kind enough to update this thread as to how successful you've been. Not too much detail obviously just an it's worth doing or not post

I was thinking about the same thing, so once godaddy had some offers on and I did buy a domain security-jobs-sia.co.uk as an experiment.

I did put some information/text on it relevant to the keywords in domain name and I was on Google fist page quite fast and I did not do any link building or any other seo on it.

It has dropped from fist page now for some reason but it still makes around $ 5 a month on adsence.

will do (this isn't going to be a 'register domain and wait a week to be on page 1 job, the competition is all around PR 2, but lovely traffic levels on a review/conduit style keyword...)

so, it may just take a month or so to be able to give you exact results...
