Have you ever seen on Twitter a snippet that says "Steve Jobs is making a major announce coming next year." Then comes a link using a new URL shortening service. OK, when you click on the link it takes you to a spam page.

This page is not in any way related to any apple products, Steve Jobs, or anyone. It is a trick to get more traffic coming in.

I was wondering if Twitter is going to soon be as bad as emails in term of spam. Twitter should have a spam button like you tube, or otherwise it will turn into a craig's list of crap.

I agree that there are a lot of spam on Twitter too. Having said that you can delete those tweeters or report them. I have found that you can tell who is for real and who is not pretty quickly on your list. Actually the more interactive I become the better Twitter seems to get.

I think some accounts at Twitter may have been hacked so could that be the reason why a sudden rise in spam posts.

  • On the right navigation bar of the Twitter user's profile page, there should be an option under "Actions" section to ''report for spam". You can also "block" the user so they are not allowed to follow you.

The funny thing is, when you use Twitter Search the shortened URLs in the results are followed by a little link in parantheses (expand)

Have you seen that? It's very handy, you just click it and it shows the original URL w/o actually taking you to the page.

But I haven't seen that anti-spam feature on the individual accts yet. Only on Search.

It's kinda frustrating because Twitter's real-time search is broken in many ways, very erratic, so a lot of people never use it.

I say they need to roll out the "expand" link for the whole site.

Twitter is full of spam now days. Everyone is using hot trend keyword with a short url to get hits to their website. As you can get tons of traffic from there but its not going to pay you anything.

I like that Twitter gives you control over the information you receive from them. It is easy to filter out the junk when you don't go crazy with the number of Tweeters you are following.

Ya there is starting to be a lot of spam on there now, nobody talking anymore, just automatic advertisements. Thats the main problem with online businesses, some hot new thing comes along then everybody on the planet jumps in like a bunch of hungry sharks and destroys the quality and content of that site. Human beings need to stop doing this, but I know they won't.

Spam is in the eye of the beholder.

The definition of spam in this case is a mislead., but constantly promoting anything - even if you tell them what the link is for, can be considered spam by some.

I know this because no one interacts with me in my follower list, except to unfollow me (usually one or two per day) if I tweet anything vaguely promotional.

Just look around in here. Hmmmmm... I believe if you look around no matter the forum or watering hole there is going to be enough trash around that it looks bad and becomes discouraging.

    Hi guys

i wrote an article on my blog about a year ago about how much spam is on Twitter however now it is a lot worse than then. It makes me wonder what i was complaining about. My routine on twitter often involves spending 20 minutes a day now blocking and reporting spammers when there is no need for it.

Twitter needs to take action but sadly it just isnt happening. In their terms it states that it is against their rules to just post links but honestly how many accounts do you see with just links on them?

    kind regards
