Paypal Subscriptions, Do You Know How To Cancel Your OWN Subscriptions ?

Ok I just got 2 emails from paypal from the same subscriber that filed a "false" complaint saying the charge was unauthorized.

They started a subscription (no this is not a case of someone stole someone elses paypal account) and used the service and then all of a sudden several months later file a false complaint with paypal saying the money was taken from their account without their knowledge.

So I am posting this for those that have no idea how their own paypal account works. If you start a subscription for a site/service then it is "YOUR" responsibility to cancel that subscription in "YOUR" account if you no longer wish to be apart of the site / service.

Yes, that's right ... It is your subscription and you must cancel it. You have options to do so in your account to cancel your subscriptions.

Seriously this ticks me off, I have been doing business with paypal for many years and now I get an email saying the 2 payments are being investigated as an unauthorized claim. Because this prick "lied" to paypal and said it was unauthorized when in fact he is the one that started the subscription.

What amazes me is he knows how to file a false claim (which is fraud by the way) but yet he does not know how to click on a "cancel subscription" button in his own account for a subscription he started.

So if you have any subscriptions and you do not want the service or be part of the site any longer - THEN CANCEL YOUR FREAKING SUBSCRIPTION! Do not file false complaints because they may come back to bite you in the arse...

    James,

Many years ago I joined a yearly membership site thru paypal, cancelled the service through the company & yet was still charged. I didn't know what I did wrong. I had emails from the company stating they would cancel my subscription but unbeknownst to me was the very thing that you are talking about. In addition to canceling via the service I didn't actually cancel it through Paypal themselves.

While I certainly think from your description that this person is just out to get what he/she wants without paying for it - not everyone is aware of the subscription service through paypal. It's a good reminder to any and all. Thanks!

    Teresa

I guess in this case it came back to bite you in the arse.

That sucks but a few years ago I wanted to cancel a subscription and was unaware that I could do it in paypal. When I emailed the vendor and told them I wanted to cancel they kindly sent me an email saying sorry to see you go but you will have to log into your paypal account and click on cancel subscription.

Yeah it is always nice to "email" people before you go off telling lies to paypal...

        James,

It's for that very reason that I won't sign up to any subscription that isn't through PayPal. (with the very rare exception) There is nothing easier than using PayPal to end a subscription, no hassles, no emails offering you more to stay.... just thanks but gotta go now... one click.

Before PayPal it could be a real pain getting unsubscribed, even the credit card companies were not exactly helpful and who wants to email somebody with an explanation as to why you want to unsubscribe?

PayPal is the reason I easily subscribe to many programs to give them a try... it's not painful to leave if I'm not convinced of the value.

Are you worried PayPal will side with the other person? Wouldn't PayPal see what happened and understand that the payments were authorized? I don't know that you should be too worried unless you did something to fool them into becoming subscribers. It sounds like you should win this dispute unless something sneaky was done.

Nope but it make my account "LOOK" bad in the eyes of paypal... I am not worried about it at all but it really seriously ticks me off that people could be so stupid. We all know how much pricks paypal can be and it is this crap that could get someone's account locked, all due to the subscriber not understanding his own paypal account.

There is no tricks, it is clearly a monthly subscription and they have been paying for it for months but just decided to file a false complaint on the last 2 months.

Just FYI, I have no idea where you do this. I've occasionally looked through my account to see what subscriptions I have and when they're due... but I can't find it, and I don't know how. So if I can't even look at what my subscriptions ARE, how can you expect me to cancel one?

One of these days, when I have a couple hours to waste, I'll call PayPal and ask. I've tried searching the FAQ and checking the help, I've tried browsing through the interface, I can't find it. So just in case I ever need to know how to cancel a subscription, I'll call them up and sit on hold for an hour until I can talk to someone else who doesn't know and will put me back on hold to go find someone who does.

Guess how high that is on my priority list?

You want to bitch about this, bitch at PayPal. I'm not stupid. I'm not lazy. And I don't have a damn clue how to do this. That's their fault, not mine.

      Caliban,
Your subscriptions are listed on your profile. Go to your profile and it gives you every single link you need to navigate paypal...

It is only common sense, if you setup a monthly subscription then you no longer want it then you need to cancel it. Its easy to click one little single button...

I have this happen often in my non technical niches...

I just take care of it for them.

These are the same folks who are very careful to leave a polite reason why when they unsubscribe from one of my Aweber lists...

Two sides of the same coin...

In my case, I am likely to run into them in person at a national trade show. Needless to say, I am on my best behavior (but I would be any way... the view is always better from the high road! LOL)

              James,

As a couple of people have mentioned, finding the cancel subscription option in Paypal is not intuitive.

When I first started online, it took me ages to figure it out for myself. Maybe you could do a poll here asking how many people know how to do it. My guess is, less than 20%.

Of course, you could always tempt fate and send your subscribers a regular update on "How to cancel your Paypal subscription . . ."

                Martin,
                This is probably true ...

As far as stating how to cancel, it is already stated on the site that is used everyday... Not being rude but come on man a little common sense tells you if you started a subscription and no longer want it you need to cancel it.

Are you supposed to send notices to members on how to handle their bank accounts and finances in general also ???

Again not being rude here but lets get real, if you do not know how to manage your own money then you have no business being in business..

                James

Oh, yeah, sure does. Show me the word "subscription" here.

You would think "Recurring Payments" is the one, right? Here are my recurring payments.

Oh, dear. There's nothing there. I must not have any subscriptions. Oh wait... here's a subscription transaction from yesterday.

So all I have to do to cancel my subscription is WAIT UNTIL THEY CHARGE ME and then click on the link to see the details, where I can finally cancel the subscription.

It is only common sense, if you setup a monthly subscription then you no longer want it then you need to cancel it.
Actually, it's common sense that YOU can't cancel the subscription - you have to beg the company that gets your money to cancel it for you. If you have a newspaper subscription, what button do you click to cancel it? What about a magazine subscription? A something-of-the-month club subscription?

PayPal subscriptions are different. No other subscription works this way. It is common sense that NOTHING WORKS LIKE THIS.

Its easy to click one little single button...
Actually, you have to click one link, drill down three levels in a menu, and select a date range. Skip or miss any of those steps, and "you can't get there from here." The option is buried and near-impossible to find. You need to start bitching at PayPal to either MAKE THIS EASIER or give you the option to cancel subscriptions on your end.

This is a fair point. As far as I know, the only way to cancel a subscription is to look up the original transaction in your Paypal history and there you'll see a cancel option. But I don't see a general "manage your subscriptions" option.

Canceling a subscription cancels all future scheduled payments of that subscription. A subscription can be canceled up to the day of the next scheduled payment.

        1. Log in to your PayPal account.
        2. Click the My Account tab.
        3. Click the History subtab.
        4. Click More filters, select Subscriptions and agreements, and then click Subscriptions.
        5. Change the date back to the year the subscription was created, and then click Show.
        6. Click Details next to the subscription.
        7. Click Cancel Subscription.

Most of the time step 5 isn't needed as most cancellations are within the first few months.

I don't know if PayPal just started this or if it's something they had going on all the time.

Last month I signed up for a monthly subscription. Within a few minutes I received notification of the payment sent and right after that I received an e-Mail from PayPal notifying me I had just subscribed to a monthly recurring monthly subscription. Hopefully James, this will help nip your problem in the bud.

Even though I track my subscriptions, from time to time I still forget about one and the payment sneaks up on me. But the blame is on me not the merchant.

My exact point Ken, thanks ... It is "your" subscription and CD I am sorry it is way easier than that, as David explained above. Paypal has many many filters on advance search. Slap a year in there and filter for the subscription payments.

@CD You should keep up with your own subscriptions, this is "your" responsibility and not anybody elses. As Ken stated above some we may forget about but that does NOT give anyways the right to file a claim with paypal and lie and say the funds was stolen illegally out of their account.

Click the pay list link. It shows subscriptions there for some reason. You can also look at the bottom of recent payments to get a link to the original to cancel.

Or...if you really don't know how to cancel a subscription, how hard is it to
email the provider and say, "Hey, I'd like to cancel this subscription but
don't know how. Can you do it for me?"

I'll be more than happy to.

Either way, knowing how to do it or not, there is no excuse for lying to
      PayPal.

You get the notice about the charge and on that notice is the email address
      of the subscription provider.

How freaking tough is it to forward the damn email to the provider and
type 2 lousy words above the forward?

      "Please Cancel"

That's the real issue. By the time I actually have a subscription I want to cancel, I'll have forgotten how to get there. I actually went and cancelled a subscription once, but since then? Forgot. Now that I know how to get there again, I'll remember for a couple weeks, but it will be several months before I need to know it... so by then, I'll have displaced this information with something else.

HOT TIP: For those of you with websites selling subscriptions, here's a cool way to to make it easy for your customers to check their stuff.

Just link to this URL in places where you find appropriate:

    https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/websc...cr-find&alias=yourpaypalemail@solomonhueyrocks.com

Now your customers can just log into their account and see any active subscriptions they have with you.

It won't completely fix cancellation issues, but it does help and makes life easier for both you and your customers.

      Works like a charm, Solomon!

So, when you send your subscriber the confirmation email, make sure you tell them that if they every need to unsubscribe, use the link and put that link in the Welcome email. It's all about customer service. Better to have someone unsubscribe for whatever reason than to complain. If you're really over-delivering to them, they won't unsubscribe anyway.

But there comes a time and place when your client has to take on direct responsibility for his or her actions. And that includes learning how to cancel their subscription.

If you do everything for them, including canceling their subscription, you are not helping them. You are hindering them in their learning curve.

What I have done is drafted up a standard response for those asking me to cancel their subscription, it basically tells them how to do it themselves. Takes me a few seconds to paste it into a reply on their cancellation request and hit send.

And guess what they take care of it and I have had them come back and thank me for telling them how to do it.

James I know that's a little off your OP, but thought I would throw it in there.

I agree Ken and this is my entire point. There are so many that do not take responsibility for their own actions. This includes following a course, ebook, step by step plan, and etc.. There are so many that blame the marketer and not themselves.

Nothing at all wrong with offering customer service but this has to even have a limit. There must be a line drawn someplace and as you stated that it's for their own benefit.

Now to go to the point of filling false complaints on paypal vs taking responsibility, this has got to be the most despicable thing you could do.

      James

Disclaimer: some ebooks, courses, and plans are nothing but junk

Thanks, James! We've been trying to get this person to unsubscribe from recurring Paypal payments for TEN MONTHS now! Every month, they send us the payment automatically and I have to go in and refund (we don't even offer that product anymore!) Thanks for this...I'm going to find the exact way to cancel a subscription and send it to them. Although they don't seem to care...maybe I should stop refunding them for awhile until they realize they just need to take a second and cancel...just don't want to get Paypal upset with me.

      Jenn,
All you need to do is find a payment they made, it gives a link to the original subscription, click that link and on the bottom you will see a cancel button.

So you can cancel it for them...

I've always canceled my subscriptions through the PayList and I always get a nice email saying you canceled your subscription from both PayPal and the supplier. Also when I pay for a subscription using Paypal they let me know I've entered into a billing agreement. So I'm constantly informed that a contract has either been made or canceled.

I think it's a good idea to get to know your PayPal account by clicking the different links and finding out where everything leads to.

What gets me is that Paypal allows this kind of stuff. I've had a couple of "refunds" where the customer only needed to ask me for a refund, but instead they filed that unauthorized purchase claim. I think Paypal should just shut down any paypal acct that has unauthorized funds leaving them, since they are either a fraudulent buyer or the account has been compromised. If they lost their acct and had to start over, it would eliminate this crap.

That is what gets me, they do not cover for a "virtual product" but yet allow someone to file a claim for a "virtual product". The bad thing is when you go to dispute it it gives you options such as proof of shipping... DUH!!! It's a virtual product!

You would think a company with this kind of money would be able to hire professional coders that knew half of what they was doing ...

Not knowing how to cancel a subscription in Paypal is understandable, Paypal do make it less than obvious. As marketers we can make it simpler for people. I'm with Ken, I give a standard answer explaining exactly how to cancel - they already want to cancel so there's nothing to lose by telling them how.

But lying about a subscription (no way he could have thought it was a fraudulent sub under the given circumstances) is disgraceful.

However, there are people who take lack of knowledge to the extreme. I've seen quite a few support requests asking "what's this subscription for?" and when I check it out the support request was made within an hour of the subscription being created.

When they're reminded of that fact it's all ok. I mean, how bad does your memory have to be to forget that fast that you just bought something?

Yeah and just got these 2 emails ....

As it relates to PayPal I will be calling them tomorrow to report your company as scamming unless the account is canceled and refunded immediately. I have the Emails to prove my claims. Hope this can get resolved without further delay.
I will be continuing my complaint with PayPal and considering a small claims lawsuit.

I emailed you directly many times without any response until now. Only to have this out-of-hand response be your response. Not acceptable. Perhaps legal proceedings will be what is necessary to get you to do what is right.

I hope it doesn't need to get to that, but will do what is necessary for justice.

Sadly, it is not likely that I will recommend anyone do business with you, including myself, anytime in the near future.

Till now, I would have highly recommended you to anyone needing an article marketing type service.
What was my response to him .. Well I have email, pm, im, a forum, support tickets and not once have I had an email for him to cancel.

I have told him 5 times now to cancel his subscription and he still has not done it. I am not going to do it while there is a paypal dispute going on. I have explained to him I can cancel his account on my site anytime but that does not cancel his paypal subscription.

Some people you just can not tell them anything... I told him to do whatever he needs to do..

      Amazing man seriously amazing

I think you're biting yourself in the nose here. You can cancel his Paypal subscription in a few seconds so why continue giving this strange, angry man a reason to hassle you?

Is being stubborn because he's aggressive really a good response? Haven't you got better things to do with your time?

Because there is a paypal dispute... As I have dealt with paypal a very long time I know not to change anything until the close that dispute. Thus the only choice is for him to cancel his subscription.

If I got an email about it before he filed the false complaint I would have canceled it.. Just canceled one yesterday for a nice member that asked me to as they did not know how. No problem 30 seconds it was canceled and I emailed him back.

    James,

Just as a precaution for you, if your account has not been frozen by PayPal, I would make darn sure to withdraw all the funds from it you can. Leaving enough of course to cover the disputed claim.

Once again I understand it's the principal of the matter for you and I applaud you for standing on your principals. Last month I went through the same thing with one of my subscribers.

After the guy opened the dispute against me (without prior e-Mail to me) even after I made the refund to him he refused to close the dispute, said he couldn't find where to do it and he was too busy doing other things.

Dunderheads like that are impossible to deal with and will cause major stress and time drain on you.

Having said that, I believe it's time you consider cutting your losses and settle the dispute. You are at the point of no ROI on your time being spent on this and risking your PayPal account.

Make the refund and cancel the subscription. Move on to devoting your time to replace this one dunderhead with 4 other satisfied clients.

Thanks Ken .. No my account is not frozen..

The dispute is under investigation by paypal now so I will let them handle it, I am not wasting no time on this. So I will just sit on it and wait on them to close it and tell the boy he is wrong...

One thing I learned from the security team in the past - DO NOT edit your account in anyway (but normal business) while they are investigating.

    Ok got email from paypal

We have completed our investigation of the transaction below and were
unable to find evidence of unauthorized access to the buyer's account. This
case was denied to the buyer and no funds were recovered from your account.

And paypal security had canceled his subscription.

The purpose of this thread and the lesson that has been taught here..

    1. Never lie to paypal just to get your money back because you failed to follow through with what you should have been doing to manage your own account.

    2. Learn more about your paypal account, browse around it, click on links, learn it.. After all this is like your virtual bank that has control of your money. Do you open a bank in the real world with any old tom, dick, or harry that says they are a bank or do you investigate, read TOS, and find out more about the bank ??

    3. If you would just take 1 minute to send a email to the owner of a site then 99% of the time we will be glad to explain to you how to cancel or even go do it for you if you request. Follow this up by support ticket or PM to make sure the owner got your request.

I hope some have learned from this discussion and I thank those that contributed helpful information ...

    Paypal gives them instructions!
They ignore them, it's just another email.
    It's not that hard.
Just log into YOUR paypal account.
You look for the subscriber, use the details you have, email addy, name, lastname, firstname, whatever, and cancel through your paypal account. Job done.

    That's it, job done.

They obviously can't do it, so you really should do it for them, if you don't, well then, expect the charge backs, because, in real life, that's what happens next.

Years ago, one of my instructors told the computer programming class to make our own book of knowledge. She recommened that we print out what we learned and put it in a binder with a tab to help us find it later. When I got out of college, I decided to update her idea and create a file of knowledge. Every tidbit that I knew I would need again, I copied and pasted or typed up into that file. Didn't need the tabs, since electronic files can be searched for phrases.

In my job, I was often asked how to do things nobody else could remember how to do, since they only had to be done monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, etc. The file of knowledge saved my sanity and probably my job on occasion.

Now, I use a folder of knowledge in IM. If I learn something in the forum or elsewhere or figure something out, I rewrite it in my own words and save it to the appropriate file, twitter, seo, linking, etc. It keeps me from having to remember which book, blog, e-book, or video I saw it in or learned it from and gets me information I need quickly and easily. Hmmm.... Maybe a WSO in the making?

This tidbit sounds like a perfect addition to the paypal file.
