I highly recommend going with Aweber or GetResponse. While there are a few free services out there, many of them either disappear overnight, steal your leads, or rent your leads. That's definitely not something you want to put up with. I recommend either making some sales without a list, or investing.

Also, it should be noted that not all business models require a list. You can try your luck with CPA gateways (such as CPALead or Ascend Media) for starters.

I was like that last month and I found emailaces where they have a very cheap service - like 2-3 dollars I think per month. There is also a rumour that there is a free month trial somewhere on their site but you have to search around to find it.

someone suggested phplist in another thread in the programming forum. it is free and should be easy to install on your own site if you have cPanel.

How often do you go out to eat? I'm sure you can forego ONE night at a restaurant to pay for your Aweber each month.

You're starting a business here, so treat it like one. Your list is the core of your business - your list of loyal customers who come back to you again and again. Do you really, *really* want to lay the foundation of your business on quicksand?

Free autoresponders are crap: they limit how many emails you can send (assuming they even get through), how many subscribers you can have, often display ads at the top of your emails, and in the worst cases, harvest emails so they can spam themselves. Even if you have a relatively all right experience, you're going to want to switch to Aweber or GetResponse eventually, and guess what... you'll have to move your whole list, aka force them to opt in again. Guess how many people are actually going to follow through with that.

If you're really broke, you can forget about outsourcing, PPC and all the other paid stuff. But don't - and I repeat DON'T - skimp out on the autoresponder. Trust me.

You might want to check Mailchimp.com. It's free for the first 500 subscribers but once you've reached above 500 subscribers, you will then have to pay a monthly subscription fee.

I don't think you can do any profitable list building with free autoresponders.
Most free autoresponders are scams.

My advice: Virtually all free autoresponders don't deliver, so ignore them.

The problem with free autoresponders are many are ad supported so you are building someone else's list and/or they have poor delivery rates. Add in the fact it's a pain to try to move them later to a better responder. To me skimping on an autoresponder is like asking if you can run a mcdonalds without a cooker. A autoresponder is a essential part of any IM business.

You should be able to keep track of a couple hundred using a simple spreadsheet. Nothing is free, costs money or time. When someone says it is free, there is usually a hidden agenda that when you find out what it is, you probably won't like it. Every thing has a price to pay that goes with it.

Mailchimp offers a free service up to 500 subscribers. They are very nice and friendly.

However, I found the Mailchimp site a little confusing. Setting up the autoresponder is awkward but it is free and it does deliver.

Yesterday I decided to step up my game and jump to aweber. It was extremely time consuming (took me most of the day) to transfer my autoresponder to aweber. In addition I still do not know how to get the email capture into the specific area of my site and add the ebook.

I can understand your point about wanting to make sales first but be prepared to spend a lot of time switching over down the road.

WARNING: This is going to come off as harsh, but if you don't face reality now you'll only face disappointment later.

If you are not ready to commit $20 a month to a service that will be holding your business' most valuable asset, you really ought to reconsider. Are you ready to go into business for yourself?

Running your own business takes commitment. It sometimes asks for sacrifices - like giving up your cable TV or your monthly jaunt to a movie theater or that delivery pizza or video rentals so you can invest the $20 in your business instead.

If you are not ready or willing to do that, please go get a job. Running your own business is not for you.

I got aweber for $1 for the first month. Has paid for itself many times over since each month. Remember you can use it for multiple lists so you may want to "sublease" it to a local business for $25/mn and build a list for them while using it for your own use.

Not free but good value & I have had no problems with is so far and thats Alvin Chung's ShoutResponse. Works out at $10/month regardless of list size/#of autoresponders/#of emails/#of trackers.

There is also a 50% affiliate programme so, get a couple of mates on board and you have it for free

They also take Paypal, in case you don't have or don't want to use a credit card.

Many people in this world do get free lunches. I've had plenty of free lunches in my time, in various countries in this world. That said, a lot goes into producing, packaging, delivering, and making someone's free lunch, so it was paid for (though maybe not by me or you).

If you want a free lunch, business functions are a good way to do it. Put on a suit and enjoy the buffet.

If you that broke I will do a account for you for a few months for free until you on your feet but it is set to only do double optin and if you import a list the subscribers have to optin

Hey, I didn't mean to lay a Marie Antoinette trip on moneysoapbox. Some people work and all that, but due to things like paying back student loans, mortgages, medical bills (humongous in the USA), etc. may not be able to afford much else. Such people (thankfully, I'm not among them) are getting into internet marketing in the hopes of supplementing their incomes. Can internet marketing be done without investing one single dollar? Answer: Yes it can.

Yes, it can, but that doesn't mean every single method is available to you.

Free autoresponders will not be there for you. I actually speak from experience on this one unfortunately, and only after it fell through on me did I realize I CANNOT lay my whole business foundation on something so flighty. (Apparently my messages did get delivered in that short time I had one, because I did make some money - but others will be wasting their time: the delivery rate of free autoresponders is ALWAYS questionable)

Freelancing, on the other hand, doesn't have to cost anything. Get a Blogger blog advertising your services (find something you're good at, content, articles, design, etc), put it in your sig file and when you get enough money, run a Warrior for Hire ad for more exposure, and THEN...

You get the idea.

Yes, there are zero-to-low-cost ways to make money, but building a list isn't one of them.

I wouldn't recommend you go the free route. That is a Big Big mistake. You will find out later down the road all the problems associated with it. You may as well start the foot right with a paid autoresponder. You can alway use Aweber's $1 trial for a month. That is only $1!!! (definitely less than a cup of coffee)

I hate to beat a dead horse but I have to comment on this one, Being broke and just starting out is completely understandable, just understand and go ahead and come to grips with the fact its gonna take you a little bit of time to earn a little money so you can invest in aweber, get response, 1shoppingcart, whatever, but I would HIGHLY advise not being in too much of rush and going the free route as far the autoresponder goes. Everyone's given plenty of reasons already and you should heed this advice. Make some sales another way however you have to ( articles, free blogs, etc etc) and save up some funds gradually, then make an autoresponder your first investement in business tools, my 2 cents anyway. Save yourself the trouble..

mailchimp is free for up to 500 users, and also there are free php mailing list/autoresponders out there that are actually quite a good free alternative contrary to what some are saying on here. Have a trawl through hotscripts and you will find some.

yodhudu- sometimes ... once in a great and infrequent while... a more experienced older brother / sister warrior in the forum may be having a bad day and get impatient with a noob. That's OK - it's all part of it. You've got the right attitude.

I set up with mail chimp... thought it would be a pretty simple process. My web guy wound up having to write 118 lines of php code to integrate the sales page to paypal to the download area... it was kind of a major hassle.

And mail chimp does NOT support affiliate marketing.

Stay well away from this industry if you cant even afford $20 a month for Aweber or an email software.

You will fail. I don't care what anyone else says. You need to invest in yourself and if you can't afford to educate yourself or pay for minimum set up (i.e. around $150 a month including hosting, emails etc.) you will really struggle.

Free isn't always good anyway.

Agreed. "Free" really isn't free anyway. If it doesn't cost money, it will cost time, and chances are, something else that you really aren't willing to sacrifice.

I agree with you Lilach, free is not good at all. We have to put aside some money to make this small biz click and move on or not it destory itself.

Be positive and money will surely come flowing, correct me if I am wrong buddies.
Just Do It the right way and I am sure all our buddies will give a helping hand if there is any advice needed

Why does everyone think free = crappy? My email marketing site is free and it is very far from crappy, although due to this common misconception, I am considering starting to charge over 500 like mailchimp.

If you are doing IM right, you should be giving away cool stuff for free.

I guess that = rule only applies to free email marketing...?

For the record, I didn't mean to advocate free autoresponders, though I can see that I might have made that impression. I don't know if any free autoresponders are any good, but the ones I experimented with before were crap. I certainly don't use any free autoresponders. I suspect most wouldn't make it past some email filters, but there might be exceptions, you never know -- some of the best stuff out there is free and open source.

When I said that Internet marketing can -- in the beginning -- be done without spending money, I was referring to other things such as blogging.

If you must go with free for the moment and will be using the Wordpress platform for your sites (also free), here is the link to the GWA autoresponder for Wordpress. There is a limit on how often you can send per day but the paid option gives a lot more features.

I stopped my aweber account last month after six months and it feels good.

I used it for six months trying to build a list and make money and they both did not materialize.

Oh and we do not go to any restaurants we just cant for now. I am really trying to supplement a very limited income. So limited I hate shopping for groceries, I think it is an expense. And I know in this economy I am a minority others are doing well.

In addition I know I am the only one who has not made good money online for six months since I started, so I must just be speaking for myself. Others seem to have a smooth sailing.

This is my take personally, you may find it useful down the line. Just like Affiliate marketing, article marketing, blogging to make money, video marketing and the whole scoop, you must learn. Even in list building you must learn how to build a list...

I wonder does aweber has some magic on instant list building that I missed. I must be getting this whole IM upside down.

Get aweber if you can afford but learn the ropes very fast and make your money back.

I wouldn't risk getting something for free. Just because your emails probably won't get delivered.

Try phpList its installed on every hosting account that has Fantastico installed.

Its FREE (Open Source) and works well..
