Authority site vs single page optin site

I have a niche that have been planning entering. I planned on developing an authority site for the niche, so have been doing a lot of content writing. However, I can't seem to finalize the site design.

Then I got to thinking about throwing up a single page squueze site for a list, and turning my site content into emails. I can see how a single page like this might have better optin rates than a full site. But I also feel like it would be harder to get that single page site ranked on google, due to its lack of content, and therefore would have to rely more on generating traffic by means other than the search engines (articles, web 2.0, etc)

Should I toss up a squeeze page and autorepsonder for a month, monitor the results, and then maybe change it to an authority site?

    Both a hammer and a screwdriver will sink a screw or set a nail, but each is better suited to tackle one of those than the other. Given that premise, having both a screwdriver and a hammer in your tool belt is not a bad thing.

    There's no law that says you can't do both. Use the authority site to drive traffic to the squeeze page.

    I think you're on the right track, but I also think you'll shortchange yourself if you "throw something up and see if it works for a month." Unless you are incredibly lucky, you won't have the optimum setup for your squeeze page and follow-up system the first step out of the gate.

    Whichever direction you decide to go, plan on committing to it long enough to give it a fair shot.

    If you have already decided to go the authority site route, starting your list with even a makeshift squeeze is better than not doing it at all...

    any other sites? Anyone have any info about conversion rates (as far as opting in goes) on a pure optin squeeze page vs an all around authority site with popup optin form?

    In my opinion, it is better to be an authority site. This instills confidence in both the reader, and the search engines.

      I second John McCabe. Why can't you use both. I understand where you're coming from but there is no right or wrong way to do these things.

      Figure out what you think is best and do it. Track the results and try to come up with something that will do even better.

      This way you'll learn what works for you and what doesn't.

      @John McCabe--Would you happen to have a relative that was an officer in the Marine Corps?

    List building should be your number 1 priority no matter what niche you go for. So, if you go for the Authority Site route, make sure to place a very prominent opt-in form with a very sexy bribe at the very top of the sidebar.

    If you dont capture your traffic's email, your leaving too much money on the table.
