What are Link Directories Good For?

I'm wondering what good link directories are for. I'm thinking that they just help you get in the search engine some how and get a good ranking. Because I never see any traffic directly from these sites. Am I correct in saying this.

    Yeah I think it's just for SEO/backlink purposes. Like in my time using the Internet I've never said "Oh I need a site that has this, this and this... I'll head over to DMOZ!"... that's not happenin'. Sometimes I'll submit to big directories but typically anything involving 'em will be automated.

    DMOZ gets used by a lot of other sites to create directories. I do get a bit of traffic from those, for the one and only site I have in DMOZ.
