Outsourcers: How Do You Figure Out Your Budgets?

After working as a freelance writer for a few years I've long since gotten a handle on how to figure out how much I should charge for various projects. What I'm wondering is how those of you who outsource figure out your budgets.

How do you figure out what you feel comfortable spending on the different parts of your project?

Before you respond please understand that I'm not looking for you to post your exact numbers. We all know that if you start to post the prices you find fair you'll get flooded with PMs that you probably don't have time to deal with. (Though if you want to PM me what you find fair I won't mind, I'm curious as hel...ck about it but I don't want to be the reason you get swamped with PMs you don't want)

What I'm looking for is how you decide what you feel comfortable spending. What is your process? Do you think about how many sales you'd need to make a return on your investment? Do you think about how much you have on hand already?

I think there are at least two ways to look at it.

First, what is your time worth? I value my time at $100.00 per hour. So, if I can get work done for less than that then I am ahead of the game. That's not to say that I would pay someone $95.00 per hour...it is just a reference point to what I'm worth, and whether or not to outsource or do it myself.

The second way would be how much is the work going to earn you? In other words, if you can pay someone $8.00 per hour, but their work is going to bring you income of at least double that, then you are good to go.

I'm sure there are a lot of different ways to slice and dice this question but the above things are what I use as reference points. Good luck!
