Warriors!!!....please come to my rescue.

Hello Warriors,

I have recently graduated from University of Portsmouth, UK with a BSc (Hons) degree in computing (2:1). I have however always desired an online business but never had any product or service idea.
Well, an idea just struck me. During my course, we were required to submit lots of course-works, usually in the range of 1500 to 5000 words and a lot of my fellow international students used to have problems with writing their course-works due to their difficulty with English language.
I have therefore decided to start a copy-writing and proofreading service to this group of students, concentrating on those studying computing and computing related courses because I understand the terminology within the field and always got excellent feedback on my course-works for its presentation and good use of English from my lecturers.
I am however ignorant about how to make this work online. Please advise accordingly.

    Bad news I'm afraid. A quick search on Google for "online editing services" shows 24 million results so a LOT of competition, take a look at the services and prices they offer and see if you can compete.

    Despite the competition which I great you is stiff, first of all think how many contacts you have. Will your tutors recommend you, can you visit the faculty and speak to students.

    Despite the competition it is a business that will take off as a result of word of mouth advertising and the odds are not surmountable. Someone has to be best and o nthe first page of Google.

      I suggest you do something different. Why not promote Pay-Per-Lead programs thru PPC? Thats very simple to do and doesnt require a steep learning curve ... and lots of affiliates make decent money with it.

        Thank you all for your responses. I agree the competition out there is fierce for proofreading and copy-writing services. However, I have found no service provider targeted at my audience "Computing students". From the little I know about internet marketing, I guess it is absolutely important that you target a specific niche.
        I also think it will be easy for me to get recommendations from lecturers in my faculty, thanks to Catherine Ford. Combining such recommendations with lower pricing, and my knowledge of the subject area, I believe I should be appealing to Computing students in the UK. I also think Facebook will provide a good source of advertisement as a majority of my target audience are Facebook addicts. Any thoughts on these?

    Lots of competition is tough but it also implies that this may be a booming market with lots of potential customers.

    I agree with Catherine, you have access to your own audience and you can probably get started advertising with flyers, business cards, etc, before you ever have to think about trying to attract customers online.

    I did a search on Google and found only 29,600 results for copyrighting and proofreading for ESL writers, so I don't think the competition is all that fierce. Add that you are targeting a smaller group to that information, computer students, and I think you may have a valuable idea here. Your best bet is to do a little research, first, then start with a free site, such as a blogger or wordpress site, to test the waters. Be sure to use the word of mouth recommended by catherine. If it goes over well, you can move to paid hosting later. If not, you haven't lost anything but time, and gained some learning in the process.

    The fact that computer science is one of the world's worst fields as far as acronyms and professional jargon go, I think this could be a really good market for you. I have degrees in computer information systems, so I know a little about this field.
