What's the big deal about putting search phrases in quotes?

Most of what I've read advises that the best keyword phrases to target if you want good google traffic are those with:
  • number of searches per month high as possible
  • number of Google results when searching on the phrase in quotes as low as possible
I don't understand this thing with the search phrase in quotes, because I don't believe many users put their search terms in quotes.

Using this method, for example, a keyword phrase "abc def ghi" might look much better than "abc ghi def".

But if most users don't put the search in quotes, then surely in reality it would be just as hard to get good traffic for either of the variations?

I hope my question makes sense!

You are right, no one is going to search for something by typing the search phrase in quotes. Quotes show just how many pages are optimized for that particular keyword. That is, how many competitors you have.

Although, with so many marketers come and go, quoted results are less valuable than they used to be. Just because people came in, created a bunch of pages, and left the game.

Also, keep in mind that your competition is within the first 10 results, so analyzing those top 10 pages and having a good strategy to outrank them, might be a better idea than looking at how many competitors you have overall

Thanks for explaining that, Alex, that makes a lot more sense now.
