What's YOUR Big Idea?

idea a day

I've just signed up again after a couple of year's absence. I bought the book when it came out 4 or 5 years ago and I must admit, I forgot about it. Browsing my library I noticed it again.

Seth Godin wrote the foreword and I quote an extract:

The lessons are simple. First, stop keeping your idea a secret. Ideas in secret die. They need light and air or they starve to death. The more people you share your idea with, the more likely it is to become real.

The second lesson is even more important - it's not the idea that matters, it's what you do with it. The real challenge (and the real skill) comes from championing your idea, shepherding it through the system and turning it into a reality.

So, here's my challenge: pick an idea, any idea. From this book or the one you've been carrying around like a fragile egg. Now go do something with it. Tell people about it. Share it. Build a prototype. Launch it cheap.

Make something happen. You can do it.
So, everyday you get an idea in your inbox. It could be good, great or stupid. It doesn't really matter, it gets your idea juices moving and can help you be creative, think up new products and new methods of marketing.

Brilliant.

Peter

Very nice! Thank you for posting this website. Seems like it can definitely affect the mind in a positive way.

If you're quick enough to act on some of the ideas that come through, there's some real gems that can easily be monetised if you wish.

But as you say, Michael, it can really help with developing and maintaining a positive (and creative) attitude - this is the real benefit.

          Peter...

Far be it for me to oppose Seth Godin. But I always heard that great ideas lose their power when they are shared too openly with too many people.

On the olther hand, Seth seems to be doing OK for himself.

I guess it all depends on the context.

          All the best,

I believe there's a philosophy that's common to the Idea A Day site, the Warrior Forum and the business networking organisation, BNI, and that's 'Givers Gain'. (It's a by-line for BNI)

It's not about what you can get from these sites; it's about what you can give. The thing is, the more you give, the more you'll gain.

If you don't believe me - just test it !!

            Thanks Peter!

I LOVE nifty things like this that get my creative juices flowing, and get me thinking about topics I'd normally never think about.

I will recommend the site to my list... but I won't sign up myself. I suffer from the same affliction as Roger:
My problem is I have new ideas all the time. I used to start launching them all over the place and spread myself too thinly.
I'm too easily distracted (especially by interesting, creativing things like this!). I need to force myself to stay focused on achieving my most important goal and "stop flitting." Guess who reminded me of the importance of that? Seth Godin!

I read through a few of these last night and signed up...
There are some great minds out there.

Being the book addict that I am, I highly recommend a book called:
          Did You Spot The Gorilla
          by Richard Wiseman

It's not a BIG read, but a great eye opener. Speaking of which, I must catch up on my reading.

I wasn't aware of this book Karl, but I've read another of Richard Wiseman's, The Luck Factor. I'll see if I can spot his Gorilla book (see what I did there? )

              I see, I see

You'll love the book, I've not read the Luck factor.

I think either you or Heather will be aware of the experiment with the basketball players that he ran (where the book got its name)

Actually, neither of us have heard of that, (I just looked on Amazon and it describes the experiment) we must have been off that day!!

I think it's known as a negative hallucination - I'd be interested to pick this one up. Thanks for pointing it out Karl.

Maybe we should start a Warrior book club? It might rival J-Mo's

    Peter,

    Thanks for the link!

I recently started compiling a list of projects for a web programmer that I'm in the process of hiring. I was AMAZED at the number of ideas I've just filed in the back of my mind instead of acting on them (via rentacoder or such). I'm sure we all do this much more than we'd care to admit.

    Very timely post!

I have recently blown the dust off one of those (I believe) "Holy Cow" ideas that was bouncing around in my head a while back. I hadn't really moved forward on it yet every time I think about it, I KNOW it can really go somewhere.

I was doing some coaching with a friend who had stalled out. After we talked for a while, I told him, "The only thing stopping you is you, Buddy. You just haven't taken the next steps. You know what they are. It's time to just take the steps and get going." (He thought I was a genius and thanked me).

And then... "Physician heal thyself" pops in to my head.

I was reminded of my own idea that I had let stall out. I took it back out of the "drawer" where it had been collecting dust and really examined it.

Still one heck of an idea.

REALLY close to being ready to market it.

Duh ... the only thing stopping me was me.

So I spent my afternoon getting things done in regard to this project and have scheduled lunch with a potential sales mgr for tomorrow.

There is a closed forum out there that I belong to that has an 'idea incumbator' section. Users can 'air their secrets and ideas' and after input from various forum members, more often than not, a half decent product can be produced.

Unfortunately though in this forum there are some highly developed 'eagle eyes' who can take an idea thats in its pre embryonic stage and before you know it, the user has created a product.

I used to think that my ideas had been hijacked (yes, it happened to me once or twice), but now if it does happen, I can usually use the resulting product to my advantage.

Now where are my notes I gathered on my anal bleaching idea . . .

    Instead of making goals:
"How Can I make $4700 in one week from 20th of october to 25th"..

instead of that (which is what I use to do) now..
    my goals are..

"How can I make $4700 in one week from the 20th of October to the 25th for at least 4 of my affiliates".

Then I set an exact deadline to the minute, I assure myself I can do it, and start writing of a detailed plan of how I am going to make it happen.

Sometimes the plan does not come immediately, but all of a sudden, there it is!

And... If I would have not made the decision to DO IT, and decided that I CAN and I WILL, then that new idea would have never come.

Try it out for yourself, but do it sincerely.

It's an absolute piece of cake to come up with great ideas.

As Seth says the real difficulty is in getting those ideas up and running (preferably finding someone else who'll take one of your ideas and run with it).

One average idea well executed will make you rich so it's not so much the idea as putting it into action.

      Kindest regards,

Andrew, not everybody has this ability, or should I say, not everybody has nurtured this ability.

It's sites like this (http://www.idea-a-day.com) that encourages you to think about ideas on a regular basis. The next stage, taking action, is obviously vital, but without an idea in the first place...

And lets be honest, even for the most pro-active of us, we'll all had ideas that we've done nothing with; why not share them and let someone else have a go? (Or maybe just a laugh!)
