Beginner MNF & Keyword Questions

Hey all, I have a few questions about keywords and MNF.

First let's say I look up 2 keywords in MNF. I don't have this software (yet) so this isn't an actual "search result" I'm just trying to understand it better.

FirstKeyword = 5,000 local - 8,000 global - 15,000 exact.
SecondKeyword = 1,500 local - 3,000 global - 800 exact.

MOB & SOC are under 10 for both.

Looking at the similar SOC & MOB count, is it better to go with the first or second?

Second question I have is:

If I make a review website for a category of products like printers for example, and with that I make reviews with some sub categories (like inkjet, laser, whatever). Would it be wiser to put all this info on one site with several pages? Or make an individual domain for every sub category? Like laserprinterreviews.com Inkjetprinterreviews.com, etc.

Thanks

    Hey SJM,

    "FirstKeyword = 5,000 local - 8,000 global - 15,000 exact.
    SecondKeyword = 1,500 local - 3,000 global - 800 exact."

    Are you looking at broad searches vs. exact? I would look at exact searches.

    MNF will give you a green light on which one to go for by checking a variety of factors. I have MNF if you have a specific term I will take a peek at it for you.

    As to question no. 2. different people will use different approaches. If you look at printers you will see over 56 million results so it may help you to laser target a niche within the broader category.

    Then again the more niches you have the more you have to drive traffic to.

    One of my niches is in a very competitive category and I managed to get it ranked #1 for the keywords above the Mayo Clinic. So it can be done. Just depends on how you like to do business.

    Since you are new I would suggest you take the low hanging fruit. Pick a keyterm you can compete for and go for it ..then later you can try checking out the bigger terms.

      Hey SJM,

      Micro Niche Finder is a great piece of software that I have used quite a bit. Without it, I probably would not have earned any money online.

      If you find keywords like you described that have the exact phrase .org, .net or .com domain name available, you should be able to get ranked for the term by setting up a Wordpress blog with the Google XML sitemap and All In One Seo plugins. There is a function that shows if the domain names are available. If all things are equal go for the one with more searches.

      For me personally, I will consider any phrase with 1000 or more exact match searches with a green SOC symbol and one of the three top type domains available. There are plenty out there, and many of these will have sites with NO backlinks at all on Google's 1st page. That is a no brainer. 1 little 2 page site I recently put up is made about 12 bucks its 1st month and it is only 1 1/2 months old. It came into the rankings at #7 and I am working on getting it up in the rankings with backlinks. But it is already in the black, having paid for its domain name.

      As far as your second question, MNF will allow you to dig down into inkjets to find specific long tail terms people are searching for inkjets. Printers may be too broad of a niche to start with, but a small review sight on some inkjets or laser printers may work out well.

      If you were thinking about buying a domain name for each printer type and getting each domain name ranked, this may get you in trouble with Google. From what I understand they want you to learn to optimize sites rather than relying on the strength of a domain name for every keyword in a related field. Maybe someone with more experience can elaborate, but from what I understand this is a no no.

      If you do buy MNF and learn to use it properly, you will find more little mini niches than you can find time to work on. Especially if you promote physical products. In my opinion you should be able to find better niches than printers or other home electronics. That is the first thing many people think of to sell. You can probably pick up any item you have laying around the house, run it through the tool, and have an idea for a niche to work on.

      Hope this helps,

      Andy

        Thanks for the advice it was definitely helpful.

        Sorry I didn't make it clear, I was not wanting to try printers it was just an example. oops!

        BUT! After someone sent me some "brainstorm" searches for ideas. I noticed an old book series that came up in the list that still gets decent searches but low exact pages and soc. I know people say books are also a tough sell, but after fiddling around with google keywords and looking at the MNF report. I'm a little curious.

        With the google keyword tool i found a few more keywords for that series with a few thousand searches (yes these are exact not broad) and when doing the exact search in google it comes up with less than a hundred for some, and all of them old personal pages from the 90s.

        When doing a broad search in google the first 5 pages that come up are very well known. Amazon, Barnes&Noble, imdb, etc...

        Does this matter? If they aren't using the "exact" keyword would i be able to pass them if someone is typing in that exact phrase? Or is this why there is little competition with any of these keywords?

        Thanks again

          A lot of people think that because there are listings from high PR sites like Amazon eBay, nextag etc, they will be hard to outrank, but if you look at the backlinks for these pages, more often than not there aren't any.

          By getting backlinks to your site that has a relevant domain name, and a page that is optimized for that keyword phrase, you should be able to outrank them.
