Wifi Access when I am away

Hello Warriors,

As some of you may know I am off travelling for a year with my girlfriend, and well I would like to carry on my websites and other online work that I do. I think that finding internet cafes will be easy enough however I think it will be more convenient if I was able to connect anywhere from my own laptop.

I have started seeing a lot of products being advertised for like a USB stick that connects to broadband and costs around £9.99 a month. Is there any products out there that I can use all over the world?? I dont mind paying for the privilage.

Any suggestions would be handy

    Hi Danny,

    It sounds like what you really need is a GSM data card. You can get them for most mobile devices, and worldwide access is possible. You'll need to check with your local provider though, to check on pricing.

    I use the Option GT Ultra with my notebook, which I got through AT&T, and I absolutely love it! Your local provider probably offers the very same card.

      This is something I've looked into for my own purposes.

      It's possible but hugely expensive.

      You could get yourself set up with a mobile broadband provider here and use it abroad too. But it will cost you literally hundreds if not thousands of pounds in roaming charges.

      The bottom line is that there is no single cheap solution that works everywhere, or even in more than one or two countries.

      GSM means time-based call charges and *very* slow connection speed. Again, I can't recommend it.

    Not sure if this is the same thing (or if it falls into a totally different category outside of the USA), but I've got a mobile broadband card through my cell phone provider (Alltel).

    Most cell phone companies offer them.

    I don't have any roaming charges (but, again, this may be different or an international plan might be possible).

    The wi-fi card essentially has its own cell phone number and I can get online anywhere a cell phone signal is available.

    I can even be online driving down the road, which is cool. Of course I'm not typing at the same time. For one of my online jobs, I need to hit "refresh" pretty often on a queue so if I have whoever is riding shotgun do it for me.

      Basically that's what Neil is talking about

      if the OP takes his mobile broadband card out of the UK, he's going to be hit by masive roaming charges.

      Both Neil and I have been looking for a solution, I keep picking his brains), and we can't find an affordable one.It's very frustrating

      Hi Danny

      The setups the others are posting about are country specific - you would need to buy some sort of Pay-As-You-Go data (not just voice) SIM in the country you're in.

      Some countries have them. Some countries don't.

      And you'd need to make sure your mobile broadband usb stick wasn't locked to the network you bought it from here.

      No one-stop international solution exists.

        As James says, many hotels have wired or wireless networks.

        Sometimes it's free, sometimes it's not.

        Many cafes, restuarants etc have wireless networks that you could hook into. Marinas do too, for the visiting boat owners to use. Often you need to go to the marina office and pay a charge for access.

        None of these are mobile broadband though.

    Well I really could not be much help here I don't think ... But I did try my PSP (Playstation System) when I was at a hotel not long ago. My sites looked great even under PSP but man was it a pain trying to type in the web address of any site ..lol

      Yes, you can take your own laptop in to most cafes. Carry your own cable.

      Also, you can get RoboForm on a stick. And there's a new wifi security tool that blocks people from hacking in while you're using wifi --- more secure than just virus and spyware protection.

      Depending on how long you plan to be in each location, there is one solution that works for me. It's cumbersome and not high-tech, but it works. I carry a wireless router with me. If you're staying in a residential area, just ask your neighbours if you can share their signal --- and set up your router on their system. If you find a wireless signal (and don't want to get around their encryption), simply ask your neighbours if you can share the signal. In both cases, I offer to cover their connection fees.

    I always see the att laptop connect commercials on tv. You know the guy that say I am blah blah and I've just fount the Internet. Here is the product on their site that is supposed to work just about anywhere in the world:

    Thanks for all the tips, I think i will just find the cafes and hotels.. I will just have to be sure that when i am near a cafe i get everything done... more time efficient

      Hello Danny

      When I'm away (and even when I'm not) I make extensive use of this:

      ShortKeys Home Page

      It is a keyboard macro system allows you to set up keys that will automatically type text out for you.

      So, for example, when I hit the keys #sig it 'types' out my entire signature wherever the cursor is.

      It's a huge time saver and can be used for entire blocks of text such as standard replies to common questions.
