What's keeping YOU from creating products in your market?

One of the best ways to build an internet business is, without a doubt, to create your own products and sell them to your interested market. That said, I know there are a lot of people like me that have seriously procrastinated on this point and just decided to try and promote affiliate offers instead.

I created a product a ways back, but never really went anywhere with it. Now I have made the decision to dedicate myself to creating products to help others in the market, so I'm going to do it and stick to it this time!

I've been trying to figure out why it took me so long to create another product, and this is what I've come up with:

1. I hate the idea of writing sales copy - I know that if I create my own product I need to write sales copy to sell it, and I am not good at that. Part of this may be because I've learned a lot about copy and realized that it's a lot of work and I haven't been able to motivate myself to do it.

2. I struggle to think that I have or know anything of value that I can sell as an information product to others. I know a lot, but I also know of a lot of products that address those issues as well.

To get past this I've just decided to learn the topic as well as I can, teach it in my own style, and do my best to deliver as much value as I can. And then just go for it.

Even if it's not a perfect product, it will still be out there, and hopefully help some people and my business will begin building.

I've been learning about internet marketing for a long time, and realized recently that I don't have much to show for it. So I'm going to change that!

So what's been keeping you from creating your own products and building your business/brand?

And if you've struggled with something and found a way to overcome it, I and others would LOVE to hear your story.

Thanks!
Tyson

I always knew I wanted to create my own products and felt that I had a lot to offer. I have created countless products by now and this is pretty much all I sell; no more affiliate products.

I love it; I feel like a 'real' business now; Clients calling me and e-mailing for technical support and other customer issues; then there are once in a while client disputes, chargebacks, refund requests, mailing list management. Then there are some minor legalities, so it is always good to have a business lawyer and an Internet attorney handy, which I do.

I have registered a business address; now getting a new phone number strictly for business, hiring part time staff...

When you grow, you see that you will need to start functionning and thinking as a business. When you are an affiliate, you don't have that worry. It really depends on your personality and what you like. I've only had a 'real job' for two years in my whole life and I love being self employed.

  • I think the thing to remember is that every product doesn't have to be perfect. You can create simple $7 products and then build these up into a set of products, or a longer digital guide, at a later date.

Another aspect that can be overlooked is outsourcing. When looking to scale up a business it's simply not possible to do everything for yourself. By creatively utilising your own skills and those of other people, you can accomplish a lot more and in a shorter space of time.

One of the biggest reasons I got tired of only promoting affiliate offers is because I didn't feel like I was actually building a business. After all, if the owner of the product decided to stop giving customer support, let his server go down, etc, then I would be stuck.

Now I'm focusing 100% on building a real business getting prospects and developing products to help them out. Sure affiliate offers will still be a part of my business, but just a small part. I think one of my biggest problems was that I was trying to make money rather than focusing on building my business.

You're right! I struggle with trying to make everything perfect before I release it, and it takes like 4x longer than it should! My plan is to do pretty much what you said, offer as much value as I can for a low low price, then start scaling things up as my business builds.

I think giving a lot away up front can really pay off in the end.

I gotta agree with you here:

One the best ways to build an internet business and start making descent money is absolutely building your own product!

That's the ONLY thing I've EVER done online! And I've loved every minute of it!

But like IP said, don't overlook the outsourcing option, it may be useful to hire someone to write the copy and learn from watching them...
