Paypal IPN (Instant Payment Notification) .. Is this new?

First I checked on Warrior Search .. but no search results of paypal IPN.. By the way Warrior Forum Search tool is the worst thing here on this forum .. you can not find what you are looking for using this search tool .. I have entered "Paypal IPN" .. and I got 500 results top of the results "Fast SEO Indexer" !! ??

Any how..
My question is about Paypal IPN (Instant Payment Notification) .. Is this Paypal new feature? or it is an old one ?

What is the difference between Paypal IPN and the old payment method: Buy Now + redirect url ??

PayPal IPN has been out for a while, probably more than a few years. The PayPal IPN is where you set a web page where PayPal will "visit" when somebody makes a purchase. It sends along information about customers payment such as the amount, emails, all sorts of data.

The difference being the customer doesn't need to go back to the website after the purchase.

They hit a button titled "Return to Merchant" then it goes to the page you've assigned.

People don't always see or press that link. Then you get complaints about not getting what they paid for.

The IPN has pretty much always been there.
What is it used for? So that your software can control what is going on.
You'll be notified that the payment went through and for how much. So that the amount can't be changed.
You'll be notified if a subscription was cancelled, so that your software may cancel a membership.
    And more...
