How do you do it. RANT

So I often hear of Warriors building simple Wordpress blogs for niche sites. They talk about doing them in two to four hours. I don't know if they are talking about writing the articles for them in that time, or just the building of them.

Well I have been trying to build a Wordpress blog. I have all the articles so I just need to enter them and format them. Simple huh. Well I have been working on this for two days, and it is just one problem after another. I can't seem to get plugins to work. I just tried to change a link to an affiliate product. I wanted it to be bold. So I put the <b> in front of it, and the closing tag at the end. It disappeared. I pull up the source code and it is there, in the wrong place and red. Never seen the red code in source code before. By the way, I use Firefox.

It is stupid little problems, that don't seem to make sense, that keep me running around in circles. I am not a complete novice at programming in HTML, but I am far from knowledgeable. I can do the simple things, and that is all I try to do.

Maybe I am just not a fit for this business. I can't seem to get over the simple obstacles of building a stupid Wordpress site. I don't really have any choice though. I can't work any more due to health problems. I have to make this work, so I am not giving up. I am just frustrated because I seem to have so many problems, that I shouldn't have.

I just don't understand how so many people can build one, two or more sites a day. I know that is isn't such a difficult task, but when I try to do it, I encounter all these stupid simple problems, that I don't seem to be able to find the answers for.

</rant>

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. I don't really feel any better, but I had to get it off my chest.

I'm no WP expert, not by a long shot, but I am a time management superstar, so if I may offer a small tip here...

When you get caught up in a problem you can't figure out, make a note of the problem somewhere, and then skip the step and do the rest of your work.

As problems arise, keep your notes, and once you have done all YOU can do, take those problems, and go find the expert and ask for help fixing those little things.

It won't just save you time, it could even save your sanity.

Thanks, interesting idea. I will have to try that. I think I have heard that before, but never practiced it. I always get bogged down in my problem and trying to find the answer.

The thing I don't understand is, a piece of code that was working fine until I changed the format of it, stopped displaying on the page in the browser. And even changing it back didn't get it to display. There is just no logical reason for that. O well, I am repeating myself, I think.

    Thanks Dani.

  • Wordpress can be exceptionally confusing and/or frustrating, especially if you are working with plugins. The plugins are written by many different people, so each person might different standards of what they feel is 'acceptable' (i.e., does it work 100% of the time, or 'most' of the time, or just 'kind' of).

One thing you can do is experiment and find plugings that work for *you*. When you get that working 100%, only deal with those, and don't worry about the other fancy plugins. Just get a core set that helps you get done what you need to get done.

Welcome to the world of CODE

Ask any coder what a day in their life is like.

Its about changing this, damn dont work, change this, damn dont work. Works here, doesnt work there. tweak, change, coffee, tweak more change.. damn..

Its just part and parcel of code. You are dealing with lots of variables, browsers, themes, resolution, tables, css etc.

My advice, pay someone to do it, if you dont have the time, patience or expertise to do it

    Hi Dani,
It took me a while to get my Wordpress Blog up and running. I knew nothing about setting one up, but found help through another network marketer.

Hostgator is used to host my Blog and it also has an auto-install script for Wordpress itself.

No doubt there are past posts on this Blog and other forums that can help to. For example with "pinging".

If you would like the step by step information that I used to get my Blog up and running, just let me know.

    Have fun

    Tim,
What many do is get a wordpress set the way they want. Then download a copy of all files, download db...

Now its just a matter of installing it over and over and just adding content and changing themes. Install wordpress which is already pre-set can be done in 10 minutes.

There are so many people out in the WWW that would love to help you build your site (for a fee). What my goal with this whole deal is that I try to outsource my work as quickly as possible. I find that saves me the most time for the things I do best.

I was wondering if that was possible. I have one site that seems to be working right, I don't like the theme any more. It get less than 400 visitors a month and not a single click on my Adsense, so I kind of let it sit. But it works right, so I could just download it via my ftp client, and then upload it to any new site that I start. That sounds like a good plan. If I understand it right.

I would be on that outsourcing like stink on po po. But money is tight, due to my being on disability. It doesn't pay a whole lot, and I am trying to get this internet marketing to work for me so I can leave disability in the dust. I would outsource everything if I could, but I can only do a little at a time depending on the money it costs. And I am married, so I have to answer to my wife about how much I spend on this stuff. As it is not producing ANY income for me at this time, she is not open to me spending much money. Sooner or later IT WILL start producing income, and then hopefully I will get more slack from her.

Nope. It's not a good plan, sorry.
There is nothing in the files. All your content is in the database. The WP files without a database are useless...

The process should really be as simple as sbucciarel posted above: you install WP and the site is built. Done. There is nothing do to with it. Just add content.

Changing a theme should be just a matter of 2 minutes FTP and a click.

What plugins do you have problems with? (they are usually the ones you don't even need...)

You don't really build a site with Wordpress. You just install Wordpress and the site is built. Then you post. It's pretty simple. Not sure why you are having problems posting, but Wordpress pretty much does the site building part for you. If you get good at Wordpress, you can pick great themes and use your widgets to place ads in the sidebar, etc. but the basics are so simple. Spend some time at wordpress.org learning more about Wordpress. Lots of tutorials there.

Wordpress and building sites is easy for me.

It is getting traffic to them that is the hard bit!

If I had enough posts I would PM you and see if I could help in any way.

For the moment however, just remember that once you figure it out just that once ... the next time becomes that much easier. Climb one mountain and the other mountains become speedhumps

    Tim,

I think a lot of the trouble you are having at the moment is due to the latest WP update. The last 2 updates recked havoc on many of the plugins, and they haven't been updated yet.

As James mentioned above, installing WP should only take about 10 mins, and that's using an FTP client to install the files by hand. If you use Fantastico it's even shorter, but using it can cause some miner problems too.

If you are having issues with the standard Wordpress editor (which is worthless in my opinion) download this one and install it as you would any other plugin:

    Dean?s FCKEditor for WordPress - a WYSIWYG editor plugin : DEAN LEE:/DEV/BLOG

When you go into the settings for the plugin, uncheck the box that says use this editor for comments. Use the standard WP editor for comments.

This works 100% better than the original WP editor and actually WYSIWYG even it terms of spacing.
