Spent $200 to make $120 today

I spent $200 on advertising a product today, but only made $120, for a loss of $80

it kind of sucks but i learned some valuable information i can use for my next campaign. Anyone else have a similar story? How long did it take you to succeed? Just trying to get a guage on my next move.

This is pretty common - thought you can reduce your spend to find that same information. My experience is it often takes 10 "campaigns" running at a slight loss to find one or two that can be tweaked into profitability. Find the keywords that convert, eliminate the others, then massage the spend on the converting ones. Takes time and you will have to bite the bullet in the beginning - but once you find a profitable combination you'll get your money back plus some...

If it was your first day pushing this product scale your spends down. Use the data for today's results to make changes.

If you made $120 you've shown that you have the ability to convert. Focus on how you converted and amplify those areas.

What type of traffic is it? PPC? Social? PPV ?

It was a media buy, ppv. My ctr was pretty low, i think i may test out different banners.

I am always testing. Every week.

I find its best to test with as little money as possible.
Adwords, for instance, is tough, but if you're very careful, you can usually test many offers for not too much. Direct marketing, investment-wise, is all about the 'testing cost', not the product cost.

Yeah i know. The problem is the site i was targeting on gets so much traffic so quick i didn't really have time to pause the campaign. It is a popular search engine.

I will take your advice though and try to run quick 20 minute tests or so.

actually loosing money or breaking even can be very profitable if you have the right back ends in place. The backends can bring in way more money than the front ends. Plus you need to consider the ltv life time value of the customer. If for example it costs you 20$ to bring in a sale of 10$ but the average client/customer spends say $10 a month and on average stays with you 12 months now that customer/clients worth $120 .

Agreed , I don't have a back end, but i was thinking about doing re targeting to get customers back. Its not my product, so i have very little control. I would add a email sign up but it is not really that style of page. Its hard to explain.

If you use that information wisely, it could earn you a lot more than you lost. Look at it as an investment, and treat it as such. Best of luck!

Thanks alot. Your right i thought about it while staring at the ceiling in my girlfriends bed. I figured, i got something that's converting around 2% (of people that click through to offer that is), but its taking alot of traffic to make that sale. I need to find better converting banners.

I believe paying for traffic is not the right want to go especially when you first start out in making money online. If you have the time there are many ways you can generate traffic to your website/blog for free.

A lot of people have been in the same boat as yourself, as long as you learn from your mistakes you should soon be heading in the right direction.

    Good luck to ya

If this is your first time - spending $200 and make $120 and thus making a loss of $80 is a achievement in itself.

You just have to focus on those things that make money and you will be on your way to success.

I have LOADS of stories like this. The key of how to make it profitable is to be ruthless by cutting down the sources of traffic that do not generate a conversion.

So if you are using Adwords, KILL every keyword that hasnt generate a profitable margin and let the rest run. Then you should be able to turn that exact campaign profitable. Try it, it works!

No adwords, just a media buying campaign. Sorry if this sounds amatuerish, but how do i track a media buying campaign? I had 3 different ads on 3 different sites, and all got around the same ctr. But i do not know where the buying traffic originated from. Im still learning,

I know this is the most rudimentary of tracking, thats why im asking for help.

Taking a loss on PPC is common. That is why you should research into more efficient advertisement, that'll give you more bang for your buck. I took a $40 loss when my PPC campaign produced no sales income, then again I was marketing a clickbank product.

Good advice, but you can't apply this until you have a ton more clicks. I mean, this guy has probably only made 3 or 4 sales. I normally wait until I have around 100-200 sales until I have any consistent data, but even then it's only the top 5-10 keywords which will provide any worthy information.

I mean, some keywords I have had 0 sales from 200 clicks... and then 5 or 6 sales from the next 200. People are too quick to jump to conclusions and it probably costs them a lot of money in the long term.
