Traditions media buys are hard to justify these days when targeted web traffic (measurable) is so cheap and efficient!

Depends on what the product is. If it has broad appeal why not give it a shot. Most likely it will be something that isn't IM related but look at all of the infomericals.

They test and track their results and will pull an unprofitable campaign in a heartbeat.

How would you go about tracking the results? Would you set up a new domain name just for the TV ad and do a re-direct to your site, so you would know that traffic came from the TV ad campaign?

It would really depend on the product and what show / time slot you could get to determine if you would have any success. I think there are much cheaper and more reliable methods available online.

When it comes to brand recognition TV can help. Look at the success of FreeCreditReport.com They had Internet success with dominating a great keyword phrase and bought it to the mainstream. They truly are a marketing company, not a credit report company. Keep driving that traffic! : )

I think I remember reading somewhere recently that these guys are in a bit of hot water with the FTC as their reports aren't free. Or it may have been they weren't being very upfront about the continuity after the 7 day free trial offer. Most people are aware you can get a free report once a year so I guess they cashed in on that pretty well with their domain name and marketing.
