Yes, but I was looking for a personal recommendation rather than just realying on pot luck!

I think he asked for "recommendations" if I'm not mistaken, Mark.

Not a Google search with a million different results.

That seems more like a "go search Google and stop being lazy" than a "recommendation" as far as I can tell.

        Wow Mark!

        Chill out Man!

You want to fight with a "man in the street?" won't do your rep much good. Been there done that and worn the "T" shirt.

I agree with you, in this case "Google" is your best friend.
I live in the UK, I have lots of websites, most of them are hosted in the USA, only three now, thank goodness are hosted in the UK.

It's really hard to find a UK webhost that has got the handle on ease of use, cpanel, all bells and whistles and at the prices offered by US hosters.

Only real positive I can give here is stay away from UK hosting companies until you have checked them out on "GOOGLE" as Mark recommends.

Use Google - search the company e.g. hosting company+complaints and see what gets landed in your lap.

Check the ratio of Thanks received to my number of posts - when yours is as high as this, feel free to criticise.

And, unless I'm sorely mistaken, in your reply above there isn't any help to the OP whatsoever.

At least I tried to do something for him, unlike yourself simply criticising another poster for actually trying to help.

        Rafter? Splinter? Eye?

I've checked it - you are still being unhelpful.

        Personally, I can recommend Ukfast

Blinding customer service, no problems whatsoever.

My ratio of 'thanks' to posts isn't half bad itself considering the length of time I've been here but last I checked this isn't a p'ing contest.

You're right, I did criticise you but it certainly wasn't because you were trying to help. Quite to the contrary, it was your lack of help and the "stop being lazy" response I felt you provided to the OP without clearly reading his post.

I don't want to hijack this thread with an arguement as I don't have a recommendation.

I'm also not disputing that you're a value provider here - the amount of thanks you have proves that. You just didn't that time is all and I thought your response was patronising. Or perhaps I misunderstood completely in which case I apologise.

Either way, have a good night.

BlueTiger, I haven't heard of fasthostingdirect.co.uk, so that's another to have a gander at...

Amanda, thanks for the heads up on Webfusion, it's actually one which I did look at and considered!

That's what I was wondering. I live in Australia and all my hosting is in the US regardless of whether the site is a .au or .com.

Is there a particular reason why it is better to host in your own country for your country' domain?

          Yes.

If you're searching from Google UK , UK hosted sites always get a preferential result unless you tick the the box on Google telling it not to search UK.

For my UK hosting I use two companies

    Positive Internet -
    AND
UK Web Hosting - UK Reseller Hosting - UK Managed Dedicated Servers - UK Domain Registration Services

I also use united hosting for my US hosting as well.

I have a fully managed dedi with them and have been with them for about 10 years I think now.

I do also have some cheap and cheerful stuff as well, Hostgator etc but for my proper stuff I use UH.

Support is responded to within 5 minutes, (seriously) and often less than 5 minutes.
They go way beyond the call of duty every time.
They have a bunch of geeks there who truly know their **** and sort the most bizarre crap out for me.

In the last week alone they have:

Written as script for me to allow me to use PHP5 on one domain on my box whilst the other 30+ domains use PHP4.

Traced down a source of a leak in our security in a flawed script we were running - oh yeah and fixed the script for me.

Done a restore of a single directory from a file I deleted 3 days previous.

I have no financial affiliation of any kind with them, but in a world where "ok" seems to be a Gold standard, they deliver a service far above that and have done for the last five years straight.

    That's my recommendation.

Simon, I thought that Google UK rankings went by domain name - .uk ahead of .com, even if the server is actually located in the US. Am I mistaken? Would a .com with a UK hosting provider show up ahead of a .uk with an American host?

Per the "take it up with them directly" rule, can we please separate out the question of whether Mark's cool, from the questions about UK hosting? Thanks.

If your market is UK, you should DEFINITELY host in the UK.

Google (and other search engines) will "prioritize" your site for UK searchers if it's hosted in the UK. This means it's physically hosted on a UK IP address... the domain name (.co.uk or .com) is irrelevant.

I can't recommend but if you look at this page

    cPanel Partners - cPanel Inc.

and do CTRL + F type in "united kingdom" and you can see all the UK
host, from there you can ask around if this is good and what not.

Thanks guys for your recommendations, I had a stressful day yesterday as the majority of my sites were/and still are offline due to server issues which is now hopefully being sorted... hence the request for good hosting recommendations!

Most of my sites are targeting UK traffic so that's why I was asking for a UK host, I don't know whether it would make much difference in Google but its worth testing out.

servage. net has loads of space basically unlimited and it has an easy control panel plus they let you host adult content and their email help desk is second to none.

I've been with RSHosting for six years and have a fully managed dedicated cPanel server with them. Its based in a UK datacentre.

They are good and have fast and effective support.

I also have a reseller account with NetHosted, who are also excellent. I have no affiliation with either company.

I like UnitedHosting too, but unfortunately they don't use cPanel. I was with them about 8 years ago.

AJ told me had problems with some hosting he got through a BT guy or sommink. I hope it's not this one.

Anyway, I too am in the market for fast, cheap and reliable hosting. I've been with UK2 for an eternity, but over the last few weeks performance (and customer service) has been appalling.

I just did a search for 'UK2 hosting problems' and WOW, UK2 has pissed off a lot of people over the years... I just didn't know about it.

I am tempted to go with a US company (I will for my .COMs), but would prefer to host my .UKs in the UK if possible.

        Hey SMS,

Yeah, AJ told me about that too. It wasn't Host-It. He recommended them to me after the whole hosting debacle he went through (after that BT guy screwed up his hosting).

I have used fasthosts.co.uk before They have VPS from about $25 per month and dedicated from around £50. Their support was pretty good but in the end I switched to a US based host because the UK was only a tiny fraction of my market and I didn't want latency to become an issue.
