Best e-commerce site for hundreds of digital products?

I'm putting together a website to sell digital products. I'll have well over 500 of these products when I'm done. Right now I'm trying to use a Wordpress Blog with the WP E-Commerce plugin.

It works ok but it seems like the more products I add, the slower the site gets. Plus there seems to be some bugs with multiple page categories that I can't figure out.

So I'm thinking of scrapping this and using something else.

Does anyone here have a store that sells lots of different digital products that they're happy with? If so do you mind telling me what you're using?

Thanks.

    Hey Mrcouchpotato,

I personally enjoy Plimus for any e-commerce needs, but I believe PayPal might even have what you need. Check out Plimus E-Commerce and PayPal, they should give you something efficient and reliable that's not self-hosted.

    Good luck

I usually use Actinic for product sites with lots of products, it's great for physical products but you can probably get something a lot cheaper for digital products using a php based ecommerce script. I've used some in the past, but not for a while so wouldn't have a direct recommendation.

  • My site contains over 1200 digital products and is run on the Pinnacle Cart script. The script is not cheap by any means. Although the script has served me well for a few years now.

I have also tested WP and found the same issues you have encountered. I also tried Joomla which is capable of managing digital product purchases but was not happy with the administration backend and reporting.

I am currently in the process of launching another digital product store based on Drupal and the UberCart ecommerce plugin. During initial testing it had exceeded my expectations and has a great community for support and a huge selection of addons to enable the script to do anything you could imagine. If you do decide to use Drupal and the UberCart ecommerce plugin I strongly suggest utilizing and enabling the Boost cache plugin once the site is ready to be launched. Just with this plugin alone we found our site served pages 60-70% quicker. Should also mention Drupal has plugins available for blogs, forums, etc. Everything you could want in one package. Drupal is also open source which means its free. And like I noted above the community support is excellent.

If economy is a factor, I think the open source OS Commerce system beats the WP E-Commerce plugin quite a lot. It's a stand-alone e-store system, but can be integrated with WordPress using a plugin.

I'm looking at some options as well. One that has caught my interest is KAGI - discover your online store's potential - offering a complete range of store solutions, online order pages, shopping carts and payment processing

I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this site?

Take a look at prestashop.com - it is a heavy duty WordPress e-commerce theme.

        Thanks for your replies everyone.

I ended up finding a cool open source shopping cart system called OpenCart. So far it does everything I need and the support is very good.
