Does freshness of links matter?

Someone mentioned to me that search engines are not just looking at the quality and quantity of links, but at their age as well -- they want to see that the "old" links remain and that new ones continue to be built. Is this correct -- do they value link age as well?

    Yes, this is documented in multiple reports about google and the "sandbox effect". Link age and domain age do play a role in rankings.

    They say that it is better to have the older links and domain, but also you do need to add to your backlinks from time to time. If you just stop promoting your site, and get no more links for a long time, you lose your page rank. This has happened to me lots of times. I will promote something for a while, get some page rank, and then go on to other things. Lo and behold, some months down the road I lose my page rank.
