An interesting question was raised by my wife.

We have a spare desk in my office and she asked whether it would make sense to get someone in for a couple of hours a day to do linkbuilding.

I can set a pc up for them and I have access to all of big mikes tools, as well as UAW,linkracer and some other blog farm type places.

Does anyone have any on site team members rather than workers abroad?

Wondering about the pro's and cons, realistically I can probably find someone for $8-$10 an hour due to where we live.

Do the benefits of having someone next to me to work on a project with outweigh the $5 an hour savings of outsourcing?

I have been told I would have to clean my office before anyone can come in (by my wife) as she things it would be a health risk for normal people, so it may not happen anyway..

Any thoughts appreciated

Paul

I do. But not in the same building.

To be honest, preparing your home or a room in your house so it is a suitable work environment for employees may create more headaches than it saves.

Remember, there is software out there where you can monitor somebody's desktop while they do work for you. Of course, that defeats the point of hiring them to save you time, but it does mean they are less likely to slack off.

    Hi Paul,

The question is - is what you're outsourcing giving enough of a return to warrant paying someone to come in and do it?

You've been around the IM block and as you know - it's not the amount of activity that makes the difference but whether it's a revenue generating activity or not.

It's one thing to have someone 'getting links' and hope that it makes enough difference to justify it, but if you can tie their activities to traceable revenue and it makes more than it costs - that's different.

I have 3 people working for me and I love it. They all live in the Philippines, I have never actually talked to them in person, always over email or IM. They get what I want done and they do it at a very affordable rates.

I agree with Andy that its the work that matters and not the costs or being able to monitor them.

For linkbuilding you can outsource that to the philippines for 2 bucks an hour and get reports showing you the work was done and you dont need to monitor anyone for that especially once you have them doing work for you for awhile and can trust they do the work and do it right.

I have had the same 3 people on staff from the philippines for about 6 months and I get so much work out of them for such a cheap rate and I know they do all of what I tell them to do and it gets me the results I need.

Now when I get to the place in my business where I need more complex and intelligent work done then I will hire someone here in the area I live in so I can personally train them and monitor but for everything else that is just promoting the site you should outsource for cheap.

yep Andy you are right it is ok paying $10 an hour if the work makes you $20.

Now when I get to the place in my business where I need more complex and intelligent work done
I think maybe "getting links" was too generic a description to use.
That is probably a better description of the work I want to get done.

So define exactly what you want them to do and make sure it is trackable.
This is just like a real business..lol

      Cheers

I understand your concern, but like everyone else has said here, there is plenty of affordable outsourcing. I have long term working relationships with some programmers and an article writer. I also understand your wife's concerns, bringing someone in to your home space to work involves a lot of things that you may not be ready to confront. Health issues, security issues, and so on. I recommend that you sit down and write down the pros and cons of both, outsourcing and having someone with you. As silly as it may sound, it can help you come to terms and figure it out on your own.

I think it gets to the point where you reach a certain level of success and then it makes sense to hire people to do basic admin for you at least - then you can spend your time on core business growth, development, advertising, JVs etc, things which are going to really make you money. Another way of looking at it is the value of your own time - when you become successful your time is worth more and if you can pay someone less than you would pay yourself to do a task then you should do it while you do tasks they couldn't do...

..its not always easy, and you won't always get the right people, but having someone / just a few people working for you can help you really focus on what matters and help you get a lot more done.
