Please rip apart my new portfolio! (Updated, thanks for the help!)

Whew, I'm exhausted. :p I just finished an evening-long install of a new Wordpress theme, rewrite of most of my portfolio's pages, and addition of an order form to my website. It probably would have taken less time if I were less of a Wordpress noob, but hey, it got done.

Here it is: — Zabrina Way: Article Writer for Hire

Please feel free to rip it apart, as long as the criticism is constructive. I won't get offended!

Any changes you would suggest making? Anything I need to add or take away to make the site look better? Did I include the right number of samples? Were the testimonials good enough? Etc, etc.

I really want to use this site to help attract new customers this summer, so I'm trying to get it set up in advance.

Thanks so much!

-----

UPDATE:

I finished making a bunch of changes and I'm much happier with the way the site looks now. I think I'll stick with it for a while now. Thanks to everyone who responded!

    Clean design, that's nice.

About your font size - make it bigger and I think that's it.

I'm a very big fan of simple designs, so I like what you've done. If it was me, though, I'd turn up the marketing knob a little.

Big headline at the top saying what benefit someone who hires you will get, and I'd definitely have a prominent opt-in form on that home page to get subscribers.

Offer them something valuable in return, like a guide to how they should choose a good freelance writier, or tips on how to get things wirrten cheaply. Then start following up with them.

Awesome, thanks! It took a long time to find a design I was happy with. Good point about the font size, I'll try to figure out all this percentage-em stuff in the morning and increase it a bit.

Thank you for the hints! Funnily enough, I was thinking the other day about writing a short report on finding a good freelance writer, so I think I may just do something about this. I'm pretty bad at turning up the marketing knob, so I'll have to work on that especially.

All right, I'm planning to put in an opt-in form with a download of a free report on where and how to hire an article writer. I also want to start writing short reports to help other article writers get started, so I think I'll create a separate Downloads page for all my reports and start to work on them ASAP.

    Any more suggestions? Thank you!

It might be a good idea to include in the report a way for people to get some "free" content, since they'll be far more likely to opt-in if you tell them you can show them a way to get free content.

In the guide you might point them to republishing other people's articles (with their permission, of course) or using public domain content, and then you can move into why original content is always best. Then you sell yourself

That's the trouble when you ask for opinions, Zabrina. Everybody has one, and they are seldom the exact same.

Don't be intimidated by the CSS. Just take your time looking through it and only make one change at a time. When you make one change at a time you know what to "put back right" if what you did breaks it or causes an unwanted result. You might want to save the original style sheet to your hard drive so you can paste it all back in if something gets messed up that you can't fix. If you need help, holler.

        Good luck.

Very good advice. I only had to make that mistake once on a site I'd worked on for days. Now I always save a backup of the stylesheet (or whatever file) if I'm gonna make changes.

Hmm, a picture? Good idea! Do you mean just a general pretty pic, or one of me to add credibility? I see a good spot for one, but I'm too much of a noob to get it there, so I'll go for the simplistic, image-free style and pretend I'm trying to speed up page loading time or something.

The blues have all been changed to reds, the font size increased and line spacing decreased, the font changed to Verdana, the link colours changed... that was surprisingly easy! I took it slowly and one change at a time and nothing bit me like I expected. Then I found a way to change the Google Docs form font. I feel so productive.

Alex, thanks for the additional hints! I really appreciate them and I have incorporated them into my plan for writing this report. The plan to increase my marketing efforts is exciting!

Wow, Nickolie, those are some awesome ideas. I'm going to work on a bunch of them when I have time next weekend. The only thing I've found is that I was mostly getting article jobs anyway, so I'm positioning myself as an article writer who will do other services, rather than an everything-writer.

Thanks for the hints, Dennis! Does the site look a little warmer and easier on the eyes now?

          *Edit*

Whew, better feedback now overall, I hope the changes did help. Mikkosant, I'm going to take another look at the rates page and see if I can expand a bit more on that and emphasize the bulk discount.

Yes! It's much easier to read now and somewhat warmer. I do like a clean design, but I also like a little eye candy (an image or two), but that's just a personal preference.

Putting your picture on the page might help you get more work. Some people find it easier to trust someone if they can see what they look like. I've never really understood that because no one would even know if you're posting your own picture, but it's human nature I guess.

I would add some colour, maybe just even one other colour to help it stand out. Right now to me, I think that it all blends in too much, and your message may get lost in that. Keep up the good work!

Yeah defiantly make your font bigger and if it already isn't make it verdana.

Change your CSS so your links are not gray (Look at your email at the bottom of the page) make it either black or blue.

Grrrr, this is just me but I hate serial commas .

Links at the top of the page, they are hidden by the lightness of the font.

Make your contact page match the rest of the font on the site and sizing. (Same for place an order)

If you got a degree or any qualifications in English, put them in your about me page.

Yeeck! I really appreciate all your comments, but a cold shiver went down my spine. This is going to require digging in the CSS. And I was hoping to mostly stick with the premade template, too. Oh well, practice makes... for less of a Wordpress noob.

Dennis, very good point about the "cleanness" almost feeling cold, I'll try adding some red or orange into the colour scheme to warm it up a bit.

        To do:

--Figure out how to increase font size
--Figure out how to reduce the line spacing
--Figure out how to add a little colour (maybe red)
--Figure out how to make the font Verdana
--Figure out how to change the link colour to red, maybe
--Figure out how to change the font type on Google Docs

Whew. And I thought I was almost done.

It has a very cold feel to me. No header graphic and no color to be found anywhere. Even your links have no color. Brrr...it makes me feel unwelcome.

The font size is too small for me to read without difficulty, so I won't. You folks with perfect vision seem to think everyone can see as well as you can. I'd bet good money at least 25% of the people that see that tiny text will leave within 5 seconds. I'll never understand the point of ruling out older people whose vision has deteriorated over time, like me, or ruling out those born with poor vision, from viewing your site. That's what the tiny text does, it eliminates potential customers/visitors from viewing your content.

With those two things working against you, I'm gone nearly as fast as I arrive.

I hope that helps, because I don't like being critical without at least adding something positive to offset the criticism (even if it is constructive criticism) but I can't read your message so I can't find anything positive to say since all I see is a black and white blur. Sorry.

Zebrina The site would benefit from a picture (black & white would look fantastic) or something and the blue thin lines caused me to look harder at the blog which was off putting. Your contact page isn't configured properly.

Your rates are great and samples are good but addressing the above would be good from my perspective. Hope this helps

I think the site looks great, and it really shows you have put a lot of work in to it. However, may I offer some suggestions, and I mean this with the best intentions, because you have done a good job. Here are some things off the top of my head:

    1. Maybe install a wordpress blog, (If you haven't already, if you have then just make a category or some where you can post content to), this way you can get more traffic writing about your service, tips on writing and submitting.

    2. Maybe set up a dedicated testimonial page and a place were your customers can submit there testimonials. There is a wordpress plug-in for that.

    3. Post your policy, were people can see them. It will help in there purchasing decisions. Some suggestions are:
    - Privacy
    - Legal or Terms of Use
    - Refund
    - Quality Guidelines

    4. You should be building a list, how you could position it as a waiting list. This way, it will give you social proof, becuase if you have a waiting list for your writing service, then you must be a damn good writer.

    5. Maybe expanding your service, will bring is more stream of income. Maybe a submitting service using Unique Article Wizard, writing press release service, link building and e-book or report's.

    6. If you aren't already offering bulk discounts, then you should.

Anyways, those are just some ideas off the top of my head. I hope that helps. Site looks good. The key thing to remember is this, the site should help the customer, not you. Have a good day.

I really like the clean design. It's a nice break from most of the clutter loaded sites.

Show different offers...Maybe a discount for purchasing a certain amount of content.

    Cheers

I think that the page is good, to the point and just what is needed. What I believe you need to now do is use twitter, flicker, hub pages and, other similar ways to get your services visible to others on the net. I think that will be what will make it visible to the marketplace.
Having a web site/blog that is highly tweaked is great but you can only do so much, and here's a website that will give a lot of tips on how to optimize your website: websitegrader dot com and their review shows that you do not have a form on your site, or a blog, and also no twitter, flicker, digg, or any other of those immediate things to help you be visible.
Another thing that may help will be to post as many articles as you can (400 to 600 words), to the article sites. That will also help bring some visibility to your site.

    Good luck with your efforts.

Yay, thanks. I have a vision of the site with a beautiful header image of a sunrise or something warm, but as I have no sweet clue how to do that just yet, I'll leave well enough alone for now.

I put my image on the About page, is that good enough? Again, no idea how to incorporate it into the header yet, haha.

        Page is getting better ...

Still need to fix the contact and product page, also, your links should all be one colour, so if your email is red so should you privacy, terms etc should also be red.

Also, in the about page, you need to knock the word "experience" down a line or two.

Hmm, what do you see wrong with the contact and product pages? I'm using Google Doc forms for those, which use iframes -- is it stuck at "loading" for you?

The font size, colour and style are different from the rest of your site.

Also, your about page picture, that picture shouldn't be indented, it should be in line with your text.

Ahh, I see what you mean. I tried to do some changes but they didn't seem to want to work -- I have to admit, the customization of Google Docs forms sucks. :p I put "Add my own contact/place order forms" on my to-do list, and I'll stick with these for now until I get a bit more time. Thanks for pointing that out.

I couldn't get the margins of the picture to behave, so I moved it to the right where it's less noticeable and doesn't mess up the indent of the text to its left.

              Thanks again!

                You are quite welcome.

The samples page is good, and yes, I meant the short reports as an addition, sorry I wasn't clear.

One other thought - if possible on the testimonials, use the person's name... even if it's Bill J or Mary S. When it's just a quote, there's nothing that "brings it home" - it's not personal and it looks like it could be made up.

I think you're on a roll, so please don't feel I'm being critical, I just look at things from a different perspective than some.

Just noticed, it may be my eyes or am I correct . It is a subtle annoyance for me anyway, the top page links and the lines seem to be slightly pinker then the header on your page where it says "zabrinas way......". In my opinion there shouldn't be a very subtle difference between the two because it looks like you got the colour wrong.

Hey Zabrina, I like the simple format. I also agree with the free report and I see you put a picture on your about me page, but I would also put that on your home page.

Also, an idea on the free report. Personally, I would offer it on how to write a great article. The reason is that is why the people are on your site, and you know that most people that are looking for someone to write content for them, myself included, are either too lazy or just don't like to write.

I think you will get people signing up, and you already know they are not going to be writing their own articles anyways, but they all want to know how.

Another idea, I'm not sure how you accept payments, but if you put a paypal button on your buy page rather than the form you have now, then you have an instant sale, rather than letting them keep shopping and waiting for the first person to call them back.

If they send $$$, in their eyes, the sale is complete and they can quit looking.

If they just send an email, they may keep looking for other companies and when you call them back, they may already have paid someone else.

Agreed! The free content could be totally open explaining the details of what it really takes to write a great article. Of course, the reader will "get" it and think to themselves, "wow, this is a lot of work... I should pay someone to do this" (guided by your tactful comments in the book about your article writing services!

If possible, get that payment vs just a contact as Bryan suggests... the old "a paypal payment in the bank is worth two contact forms" philosophy.

Another good point, hmm. Some are from people on forums who don't use their real names as usernames. I think I'll message them and see if I can use their real names. I'm glad for any constructive criticism you offer, thanks!

        Hope this helps.

I'd rather keep it on the About page if possible, honestly.

...honestly, I probably did get the colour wrong, haha. I'll check that ASAP, excellent spotting! Thanks!

Wow, excellent ideas! I'd love to do the Paypal button thing, I'll have to figure out this weekend how best to do it.

Hmm, I'll have to work on that subtle marketing while writing it, then.

Thanks to you all, I have a list of free reports to write now:

        --Getting free content

I love it, though I would personally make 3 changes.

            1
Make the homepage a bit less formal, with a bit of humor and personality. Something like "Hi, my name is..." (etc)

            2
Start fewer sentences with "I..", and instead ask questions and use calls to action. So less of "I do this very well, for a good price", and more of "do you need this done very well at a good price, then do it now".

            3
You have a beautiful and honest looking face. I would use it on the homepage. (Please excuse the compliment, I'm not hitting on you)

            Good luck with your portfolio.

Zabrina, The paypal button should be pretty easy. I think you can go to paypal and "set up a button" It will give you the html and you just cut/paste.

No changes. This is rather perfect. An emphasis on clean typography subconsciously reinforces your work as a writer. This should work wonders for your business. Good job.

Great, thanks. I explored Paypal and found that option again, that should help a lot. I'm working on a setup so people can easily order the length/quantity they desire.

A good set of ideas, thanks. When I rewrite the home/about pages to be more benefits-oriented, I'll include the first two suggestions. And thank you, you're excused. The pic will be incorporated into my homepage rewrite.
