200,000 visitors a month - no money - help?

I've been given an interesting online marketing puzzle and would love to get your ideas on how to monetize this puppy.

Here's the details...

A new client created an industry directory with the idea of making $$ from the folks signing up to be in the directory. He discovered the niche had no money and didn't spend it on marketing. I've done test and verified that not only is he not making money - nobody is making money in this industry.

But, here's the fun catch...

He is now generating 200,000 site visitors a month from consumers who want to access the directory. 68% of that traffic is moms in their late 20's to late 30's.

We've tried some of the first things that came to mind... Adsense makes about $2000 a month (he's burning much more than that to maintain and develop the site).

Next we put up larger banner ads and directed them to weight-loss click bank winners. To our shock, we've generated 300 plus visitors a day to these "proven" sales pages and have seen ONE sale.

Now we are scratching our heads. The next test is to create a "Mom's List". Find a spokesman, build a list around mom issues, then monetize that.

I would love to get your insight into how you would go about monetizing the traffic.

What are we missing?

Have you tried CPA offers. I have had quite a bit of success with them

Like others have suggested, you should try CPA offers. Plenty of networks out there to try different offers. Just test many different offers and see which ones makes you the most money.

    Keep testing till you bleed.

The people hitting the site are the only ones who can tell you that you've hit a winner.

Testing doesn't cost much, if anything, so again, test till you bleed...

Adsense perhaps? A niche with no money does click on ads, with that level of traffic you should get some nice CTR.

Also, if you have so much traffic, people would die for advertising in that site.

start an Ezine about saving money. Then hit them
every day with an article and a promotion.

There is some lady I read about that hits her list of
women subscribers 5 times a day and they buy like
crazy... because it's like household items she gets
to review or something - turkey basters, garden weasels,
etc... It's like HSN by email.

You can try pay per lead (where you get paid $1, $2 or more per person who enters their name and email or whatever info is required by the advertiser) with stuff moms are interested in.

Free baby product coupons, for instance, would be great, but anything young mothers are interested in might work, too - free makeup samples, health and beauty aids, etc.

Could he start adding content for just for moms? (Don't know if this would make sense on his directory site.) In my humble experience, I find that banner ads don't quite work with products (in terms of conversion). But what does seem to work better is articles with a related link to a product down at the bottom.

You can find great content for moms here:

Private Label Content for Marketing to Moms

He could sign up as an affiliate for CafeMom through Commission Junction -- they have a pay per lead at $2.00/lead. I had a conversin rate of around 33% for CafeMom (but I don't send a lot of traffic their way, because I'm in the weight loss niche -- but I do have a small "Moms" section)

Also, make sure he tests adsense placement. It can make a world of difference.

Another Clickbank product he could try is FitYummyMummy:

Sorry for jumping around there; I was just typing ideas as they came to me...

There could be a number of things keeping the site from making more. You might want to go through and make sure that the content you have is appealing to the traffic you are bringing in. If you have 200,000 visitors coming in and half of them are not really interested in what you have to offer then you are losing potential customers.

I sure hope you are building a list... That will be a sure-fire way to be able to market new products and services efficiently in the future.

Wow, thanks for all the responses and ideas.

      "Test till you bleed...."

Ha! I"m not bleeding, but the client is if we don't make this work. He's got multiple 6 figure skin in this game.

One of the unique challenges here is that the traffic is finding what they are looking for in the directory - but that is not something they would join a list for or want to join a list for...

Which is why we are looking at segmenting/siphoning the largest percentage of traffic (moms) and funnel them off to a separate site/list with a spokeswomen/persona/ that then builds the relationship with them.

Thanks so much for the "mom" related links. I was a bachelor till 40 and just had my first child last year - so I'm having trouble accessing my "inner mother". LOL. (though I have encountered my inner sleep deprivation).

Your insights will help me get there faster.

I have to admit I was very surprised when the banner ads generated so much traffic and so few sales to the click bank stuff. Began wondering if ClickBank actually accurately accounts for the traffic and sources of sales.

With 200,000 visitors a month... I would try to sell banner placement. Simple old branding advertising.

I had a directory once in a particular niche, and sold space for banners of 120 x 60 all around.

It worked ok... nothing to get wet about... but much better than adsense and co.
