Always Do Your Due Diligence- Don't Get Burned

Warriors, let this just be a reminder to do your due diligence before entering into work with ANYONE!

Yes, the group we have is wonderful, but like any forum there are scammers around.

I myself was almost taken by one today in the JV forum.

You see, the name signed on the post, didn't match the name signed to email communications. The Paypal email address that was sent, belonged to an already banned forum member (which was found by using the search function, and don't worry I have already reported this to Thomas at the help desk.)

Point being, always do your due diliegence. If something doesn't seem right, you can always check into the person.

Google is wonderful, as is the search function here, and always talk to other members to see if they know of this person. Like in my example said person posted in a thread by a senior warrior that it was great working with them or something similiar to that effect, so I hit the PM function and simply expressed why I was contacting that member and to see if they had indeed worked with that person and the response I recieved was to STAY AWAY.

Don't be caught by a scammer, make sure you check people out first if you don't know them. (I was cautious to begin with as this person has only registered about a week ago)

Best wishes warriors,
Sylvia

Sylvia, for that matter, you can work with people who you know very well
and still end up with a headache.

I've been told I'm a royal pain in the ass to work with.

And this surprised those folks even though they already knew that I was
      a cantankerous, grouchy old SOB.

You'd think they'd tank the hint.

      Hi,

Thanks to remind that. It's really important to make sure with whom we deal with. Money can be lost really easily on the Internet.

    James,
Kids are doing pretty good. They're growing up much too fast though.

And yeah, I've kinda been on the sidelines, working really hard to expand my businesses and make some larger change this year LOL Forums and fun stuff tend to interfere in running a business.

I haven't entered into any JV agreements, but I read this forum a lot and have run across quite a lot of nightmare JV threads where people got seriously burned from doing business with people that they didn't know very well and didn't check up on.

    Proceed with caution.

Sylvia - some interesting timing on this thread. I just spent two days helping friends out of scamming situations. Helping to lock people out of sites, explaining Cease and Desists, saving emails for police records, reporting, etc.

It seems that there is one huge amount of predators out there right now and if times get harder, that number is going to increase.

What is really scary about the two I aided with this week is the amount of harassment involved. Threats, continual emails even after cease and desists are sent, continual hammering of the victim. I've never seen this type of thing before. Usually they just disappear after being sussed. This is a whole new breed of scammer - desperate, threatening, and unable to rationally understand when they've been figured out and the game is over. What I've seen in the last few days has been totally crazy.

An added note to yours --------
For cripes sakes do NOT give these people your address under any circumstances unless you have done all the due diligence you can and know for sure you aren't going to end up with a lunatic parked on your doorstep. If money has to change hands via some method like money orders or other real mail has to be sent, set up a PO box or arrange with the post office to have the mail sent to a general address rather than your home address. It's bad enough to find out you are stepping into it with a con or crook or lunatic when they don't know where you live. It can be frightening if you find out something is very wrong and they DO.

Great post. Yes, you have to be ultra paranoid in this world. I've been screwed over far more times than I've been treated well, but when I am treated well I make sure it pays off for them as well.

Search this forum, and any other marketing forum you can find. Search google, the BBB, whatever you can to see what others are saying. You should also get references, and CALL them to see what they say. Emailing or IM isn't as reliable as it could be the scammer talking to you. Talking to people on the phone eliminates a lot of anonymity because you have their #, and they have different voices so you know it's not the same person.

Measure twice, cut once. This applies to marketing as well. Thanks for the great post.

Thanks Sylvia...you not only did the right thing by doing your due diligence, but you did the right thing by posting a warning to others.

    Call them
Yeah, be careful with that one. Once you call, they also have YOUR number so if you call the wrong person, you are stepping right into it. Only call people or businesses you trust.
