Problem with choosing domain name

Hi,

I wanted to know if I should pick a .org domain name if the .com is taken? Or had a word to the beginning or end to get the .com domain.

ie, dog shirts for the keyword, but .com is taken. So get dogshirts.org, or get bestdogshirts.com?

You could do either or both. A lot would depend on whether dogshirts.com actually has a website or not. If it is just a parked page and has been registered for a while chances are the owners are just squatting for adsense revenue. If you build out .org, it could quite easily rank well.

You can get just as good of results with .org or ,net as you can with .com The only thing that seems to be the biggest issue here is that people will sometimes trust a .com site more than the others, probably because they are more familiar with it.

    Hi newpatch,

Personally I would keep trying until I came up with an available name for a .com

I wouldn't risk building my site on dogshirts.org and then have someone come along and start selling dog shirts off of dogshirts.com and make me look like I was the one who copied them. Everyone will know that dogshirts.com was registered first. Besides, I think most people remember .com's easier.

    Just my personal opinion though.

Here's a video by Bob Parsons, the owner of GoDaddy.com giving his top10 tips for picking a good domain name.

    pick-domain-name-pro-avoid-silly-mistakes

Tip: In the future don't post your domain name ideas in public forums because you run the risk of someone registering it before you do. Also if you search for a domain name and it is available, then register it immediately. If you wait a couple of days someone else will grab it because a lot of domain investors have access to all the names that are being searched for.

    Best of luck,
    Jesse

If the exact domain name that I want is available in net or org, I take the net or org. If it's not, then I will consider adding something to the end of the domain name. I often find that the .com is just a parked page ... sometimes it is for sale, but the price is normally higher than I would want to pay them for it.

    Thanks....

Seems like the domain name for the .com is not even related to the niche I am interested in. The website says that it's used to search for advertisers (whatever that means). I can also add a word to the beginning like, bestdogshirts.com or buydogshirts.com, what about that?

    Jesse,

    dogshirts, was just an example.......

      Hi Jesse,

Yes, the most important thing is to have the keyword in your domain name, so even if you were to use mydogshirts.com or something similar with the keyword in there, you'd be in good shape.

      Cheers,
      Bruce

I think you're much better off adding a word before or after the domain you wanted, so you can get the .com instead of taking the .org

Besides .org's were not meant to be business domains, they were created for organizations like charities, churches etc.

Personally I would never build a business website on anything but a .com and if I think it's a really great domain name then I register the .net .biz .org and all the others just to keep anyone else from registering them. I have built a couple of websites on a .net when I also owned the .com and the two websites had complimentary products.

The rule that I use for choosing a domain name is that it must be a .com with 3 words or less and describe what the site is about.

Watch the video at GoDaddy that I linked to in my earlier post for some good tips.

      Good Luck,
      Jesse

Add the word to get the .com. I've got a pretty well ranking .com domain with the word "the" at the beginning. Then I have the really sad .us domain that has no extra words in it. I think it fell off the end of the Google world....

I'm exactly in the middle as you are. I've found out the best choice, glad its alike with website flipping expert point of view

    Best choice
`add a word in the front (like 'the') or end (like 'guide' or any related word) of the domain is what I've found out the best way out.
    `choose .net

    Second Best Choice
    `choose .org

Man, website flipping made me quite dizzy. Those techy and design stuffs. I should have relaxation.
