Hi,

My list is 500+ and I had an offer for an ad swap from someone with a list of 1000.

And they said I would have to send their offer to my list twice to make up for the fact that their list is twice as big. Is that normal?

By that logic if I swapped with someone with a list of 10,000 then I would have to email my list 20 times?

Would appreciate some advice! Thanks

Nothing unfair about it - the person has given you the terms they require to do an ad swap with you. It sounds logical as otherwise you would be getting twice the benefit of the swap.

You can say "yes" or "no".

Your "logic" doesn't apply because the owner of a 10,000 list wouldn't be interested in swapping with a 500 member list.

You can agree not to do the ad swap.

    No big deal.

For me to give you advice, you have to pay me $1Million U.S.

You can take the deal or refuse it. :-)

Seriously, each deal is unique, so they have given their terms - doesn't mean they aren't negotiable.

Also, consider this - repeat mailings *typically* generate additional sales (within limits). It's usually because some folks don't get around to reading the first message and the second one comes in and they open it.

If you think it will hurt your list or not help your profits by them mailing your offer, then skip the deal and look for another.

    All success.

      Thanks for all the advice.

I more just wanted to know if it was the normal practice.

I guess I just felt that emailing my list twice about the same offer would be a little awkward.

But to be honest, since I haven't done an ad swap before, I actually feel worried that any ad swap email is going to annoy or lose me subscribers.

I was thinking, I could probably just ask the other person to email to half of their list?

When you go after the guy with 10k list make the offer that in return from one broadcast email from him, you will put his email into your autoreponder series for ever.

That way all your subs get just one email about it but as your list grows the the other partner will see a growing response from his one time email. you could even negotiate that the AR series email goes out with your affiliate link in it so paying for the permanent email slot

It seems fair enough to me... in fact, you still kind of get a better deal, he's mailing to 10,000 different people, as opposed to the same 5,000 people twice, so I think you'd do pretty well with this deal.

That is common. But more important than list size is responsiveness of the list so I (and a lot of peeps) are more interested in clicks than just size.

Ask your potential ad swap partners how many clicks they can deliver then offer to send a couple times to come close to matching that vs. just list size since your list size is pretty close.

I would prefer someone with a list of 500 can deliver 100 clicks then someone with a list of 1,000 that delivers 50 clicks.

Also make sure you to look at their offer. A lot of ad swappers offer crap and you don't want to be known to your list for promoting crap because they won't stay on your list for long.

Thanks for that advice Alan. Clicks are more valuable than just list numbers.

How do I track clicks from the other person's list?

There is a big element of trust when it comes to ad swapping since you can't really track their clicks (at least not that I know of). That's why it's good to do your due diligence of your potential ad swap partners.

If you don't know the person, check them out in the ad swap forum here and the other forums for ad swapping. And ask around.

Once you do an ad swap and if the partner said he/she could deliver 200+ clicks and you get 0-2 opt-ins and little traffic then you'll know for sure they were full of it.

It's my understanding that usually the person with the bigger list simply sends your ad to the amount of people you have on your list. You could counter offer with that, so that you aren't seen as a nuisance to your members.

But to expect an even swap with someone who doubles your list size, now THAT'S unfair.
