Building U.S. Online Business In Other Country

I have been wondering if building a U.S. online business while living in a different country such as the Dominican Republic would have a negative effect on my SEO and Google rankings. Does Google diminish the strength of your site when it notices that most of the work is being done from abroad? For example if backlinks are posted from a foreign IP address maybe they have less value is what I guess I'm getting at.

I'm asking because I'm graduating from college in a month and half and I am not letting myself go back home. I have a job now that I am planning to keep after graduation but am not sure how much I will be paid (SEO type stuff). I will also be building my own online business that I'm sure will explode, but I want to put the most value into the SEO.

You could always get a private proxy server that's based in the U.S. and do you backlinking through that.

True, so you think it would affect my site negatively to use a foreign IP?

If that was true... how could anybody outsource backlink building, blog posting, article posting etc. to remote countries?

      Just asking...

(I might be wrong but both posts above sound like total nonsense. Sorry)

I live in Asia and I've never had problem with Google as far as this goes. It's probably wise to just start on whatever you're working and deal with these issues later on.

The more important factor would be making sure your site is hosted in the same part of the world you are targeting. You will get bonus points for your searches within that country.

Secondly, make sure you do your keyword research, and analysis based upon information from the USA, not based upon results as you see them in your home country. The search results will be different.

I am an American, living in the Philippines. I use Market Samurai for my research, since it uses proxy servers and will give me the results as I would see them in the USA.

One more note, in the unlikely event you would ever run into problems, you can get hosted Windows XP or Windows Vista virtual machine which resides in the USA in a data center. You can remote connect to it, and do work "as if" you were actually in the USA. I explored that option before we headed to the Philippines, but have found it unnecessary, so far.
