Multiple Wordpress sites under one domain?

Hey there everyone, I'm thinking of setting up about 8-10 of my wordpress-powered sites under 1 domain. In other words, just using seperate folders on the server for each site rather than seperate domains. Not subdomains, just seperate folders under the one domain, each with its own index page.

Anyone doing this? Does it work? Any traffic problems? Thanks.....

I'm guessing your primary domain is going to be some kind of branding?

I've got subdomains not folders following.

Each site is considered an independent site, so there is no traffic issue.

      Hi Darrell

I have 15 domains on one account at bluehost like this. There is no problem for me. I do not know how many more I would put on there as there is a lot of traffic cumulatively with all the domains.

I will probably put more on another host so that I do not have all my eggs in one basket

No real branding with this domain, and in fact I'm wondering if that will seriously affect traffic to the sites if they don't each have their own niche-related domain names?

      i.e. "www.somedomain.com/blablablamarketing" vs. "www.blablablamarketing.com"

These will be various review sites & blogs, and I'm wanting to streamline so I don't have 500 thousand domains to keep track of.

Thanks everyone for good info so far.....

      Hey Jill,

Just a question - is each of those subdomains a seperate domain
      name?

      Regards

I can only add one thing to it:

        1. If all your blogs will be semantically related, meaning covering at least related topics or can be grouped together - use subfolders.

        2. If each blog will be covering separate topics - go with subdomains.

I know there are many arguments on the benefits of each but my personal preference is to clearly separate them. Nobody can predict what Google will do but they do view subdomains as separate entities.

          Hey Alex,

Just want to make sure that I understand you correctly....

          By subfolders you mean:
          www.somedomain.com/subfolder1
          www.somedomain.com/subfolder2

          And by subdomains you mean:
          www.somedomainabc.com
          www.somedomaindef.com

          Correct?

I'm sure there are others who want to ask the question as well..

I did it for one of my sites, and didn't encounter any problem.

    Hi Darrell,

Yes, it works, you need to check out "wordpress multi user". It's basically wordpress made to run on subdomains out of the box. It's originally meant for visitors coming to your site to register blogs, but you can disable other people from registering and use the subdomains/subfolders only for yourself.
The post Alex made about subdomains vs subfolders is also very good.

I would use sub-domain names or even better use domain names redirected to the sub-domain names. This would not effect your traffic or anything, there are many people that make very good use of sub-domain names.

    Greg,
    The below is correct...

    Sub-Folders
    mydomain.com/subfolder1/

    Sub-Domain
    abc.mydomain.com

    Domain Add-On
    my2ndDomain.com --- redirected to mySub-Domain.my1stDomain.com

Redirection ofcourse can be to main domain, sub-folders, or sub-domain names..

Hmm.....Good thoughts here. I hadn't thought of the Google aspect. I'm rethinking this and it looks like subdomains are the way to go instead of subfolders. Thanks guys!

The only issue with running so many blogs on one domain
is it will all class as one because they all have the same IP
address so the linking and back link will not be relevant
to the search engines if I'm not mistaken.
