Is Wordpress MU worth getting or will it cause me a lot of heart ache...

I run multiple sites and like the idea of having one dashboard (almost)... Can anyone advise..

Installing it is tricky, but I did it, so it must not be THAT bad. Then, it's a dream!

Is it much different to wordpress...I've noticed that a few people have wanted to revert to the single form..

If you have code aversion... the initial setup might be a challenge

I hope you are aware that with WP MU the default result is having blogs on subdomains of your site: blog1.example.com; blog2.example.com etc.

It is possible to do "domain mapping" (they do it on wp.com site) but it needs advanced server knowledge and access.

Probably, from version 3 (due in a few months) WP and WP MU will merge:

it's pretty straight forward but it's quite the resource hog.

also, you have to consider some things in regards of your hosting:

    - do you have wildcard dns enabled? (so you can use subdomains instead of folders)
    - unlimited addon domains are a plus. (so you could set up a site with mu in a few seconds, register a domain name and point it to your mu site)

If you have multiple domains and are thinking you can tie them all together with WPMU that isn't going to happen.
As Istvan mentioned you either use sub-domains or sub directories.
I imagine some sort of redirect from the domains could be worked out but not sure.

as i mentioned above, you need to make sure your hosting plan allows for unlimited add-on domains.. then it's really no problem.

No seriously it is going to happen.

You just need to use the free domain mapping plugin. You dont need wildcards or unlimited domains, I have no idea why people are telling you that you do.

How do I know - I run a site -informationjunkie.net - that does exactly that.

      Plus...

The default for WPMU is not subdomains its subdirectories.

And if you think WPMU is a it of a challenge, just wait until Wordpress 3 and then then single and multi-user are going to be combined anyway.

I use 1and1 for hosting so I think I am ok with the sub domain names and then I gather I can use domain name forwarding .. for specific domain names?
