The More You Give; The More You Will Receive

A popular thread these last few days has been David Thompson's http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...iors-list.html

David asked, if you were to meet with a top Warrior, who would it be? This might not simply be hypothetical. Just go by the Warrior Events section and you'll witness hundreds of Warriors meeting other Warriors. They might not be in their top five list but getting the most out of a meeting is a skill that should be honed and practiced.

I'm going to be attending my first IM meeting in a few weeks. I've been to a ton of other business networking meetings before but not within this field. Here's just one tip that I've learned over the years that I'll share today.

The first thing you need to do before attending any meeting is to nail down your purpose for going.

Am I going for the social aspect, to meet up and have a general chat, a bite to eat and drink? Yeah, partly, but what a waste if that was my only goal.

Is it that I want to get as much information out of the other guys as I possibly can? Yeah, sure, I want some information, but I don't want this to be the purpose of my attendance. If I approach it right, I'll find out stuff that will have a real positive effect on my business, but without the need to focus every conversation on my issues and without asking questions about me, me, me!

Here's my tip:

I approach this kind of business meeting with the purpose of seeing how I can help and offering whatever I can. It's the same way I approach this forum and it's proving really useful to me and my business.

If you permit me to go all spiritual on you for a second, Deepak Chopra calls this the Law of Giving and Receiving. Essentially and simply, the more you give, the more you will receive. It really works - ask anyone who is truly successful.

I've found that this is a much more powerful motivating purpose than seeing what I can get out of the situation. If you adopt this simple philosophy within your business (and life actually, but that's another story) I can guarantee you'll be more happy and successful.

I have no motive, apart from meeting some new friends.
I'm going to be absolutely useless there - worse than useless.
Interact with me at your peril.

and the giving doesnt have to be any physical, tangible thing. You can give your advice, opinions, direction, etc.

Bad experiences are also good to know about, but for some reason, people don't usually share their failures.

D'you know, I hadn't planned on going to any meeting laden with gifts. That just reminds me of that kid at school who always gave out his sweets in the hope of making a new friend.

Not a good strategy, it never work for me anyhow.

Oh no now I don't want to go to the meet up lol. I have no valuable information or advice yet ... still in the process of trying to figure it all out. So really I would be there to get advice but have nothing to give in return ... except my wonderful company!

Morphing into a fly for the wall sounds good! Don't know if i'll be able to take notes as a fly though!

Should I come along WHEN I'm more successful?

The skill of listening is something that is really valuable to take along. Your wonderful company will be appreciated too.

But really, just chill about it, and if you wish, ignore me. The intention wasn't to put anybody under pressure, just to suggest that you attend any meeting with a solid purpose in mind before you get there. It is OK just to want to have fun.

          Don't worry Jem,

I make two short planks look like a computer, and I'm just going along for the Scottish air and to get out of the house for a day - possibly two if I end up drinking.

I owe John a drink too, for me it's more of a social thing this time round.
