Thanks in advance for all your replies

Well, there are so many different ways. What is your strong suit right now. Is it article marketing, general seo, social media, adwords, etc..?

If I knew what your strong suit was I would be able to give you a better answer.

I think i want to entice people to opt-in to my list by offering to teach them how to build a list for themselves. this way I get to learn and they get to learn at the same time and grow together. learning the art by teaching the art and doing the art.

I dont know, is that a good idea?

I am currently very interested in the skill of list building.

Well, it's not a bad idea but I am not so sure you should start that way. Because what are you going to try to sell them on in the long run?

What you need to do is just write up a short report on list building to offer them for free to join your list. Then you can send out a few emails with some tips and what not and then pitch them an affiliate product about list building so you can make some money. After all, that's the point for most list, don't you think?

That strategy will work for most niches. I don't know what your is but it does work.

Then, you could do some article marketing to get the folks to your site and hopefully get them to sign up on your list. Article marketing is free to do. You can write a couple of 10 articles or so and send them out to all the major article directories. Of course there are many more tricks that you can do to maximize your efforts that I could go on and on about but I think you get the point.

List building isn't so much a skill as it it is a strategy. You have to have a plan of attack. Now, writing your auto-responder series is a skill.

Why not entice people to join your list by saying you're doing a case study and you're going to tell them what you are doing to build your list... and more importantly what results you are getting from each thing that you do

honesty is a great way to build trust with an email list - don't fake it!

the type of traffic depends on what you have...
do you have time or do you have money?

      Thanks for your advice,

and to answer your question, right now, I have time, not money

While we're on the subject, will someone please tell me if 'the money' is really in the list or is that just a matter of opinion?

    Thanks, Ray.

If the real money was in the list then you could just buy a billion email addresses to send to and be a millionaire. Its in the quality of the list and the responsiveness to your offers, so its really just not about building a huge list but a quality one...they need to be interested directly in what you have to offer and have to be buyers and not just freebie seekers.

Just use these 4 simple steps and you'll be up and running in no time:
      1. Find Your Niche
      2. Create a valuable report
      3. Make a squeeze page to capture names and give the report away for free
      4. Drive traffic to your optin page
Once you do all these things your list will start building. Just remember that you won't build a big list overnight and it's going to take time. Don't get frustrated and just focus on delivering value and building your list one person at a time.

The money is in the list if you foster a relationship with the people on your list and you are prepared to "give" them something and not just go in with the hard sell approach. So many people get a list but then lose them because they have not been patient enough to build the relationship first.

    Thanks for all your advice:

As for my niche, what do you think about this one?

"How to build a quality, responsive list without using an autoresponder."

    How does that sound?

Is that even possible? (not using an autoresponder)

As always, many thanks in advance for all your replies

    JD

edit: and as a backend product, I can step it up a notch and promote a product on how to best use autoresponders ... would that work?
