Affiliate Marketing through Twitter

Just wondering, I have 3 questions for those people who were successful in Affiliate marketing through posting tweets

1) How many followers did you have?
2) How many times did you tweet daily?
3) From the day you started to tweet, after how many days was your first sale?

Because I am willing to give it a try, already trying but I want to know if I'm wasting my time.

From testing, person experiences and close friends of mine who do a lot of social media I agree that Twitter doesn't convert very well. Especially in the IM niche.

It used to be good for a while - now it's just full of spammers promoting to spammers.

In my opinion Id recommend staying would stay away from Twitter - even John Reese deleted his twitter account. A heap of people have given up on twitter.

Focus on more fundamental strategies like article marketing, PPC etc.

    Hi Luca,

If you are promoting something that you are really interested in and are prepared to spend time on your topic and tweet regularly, then you can generate a bit of interest in your products, but generally speaking, I agree with BenBrandes that it's not as effective as it used to be.

Remember that you don't just want to be tweeting links to your products, you want to offer content for free too so that you don't look spammy. So only do it if this is a topic you really want to talk about.

I think Twitter is great for traffic IF you take advantage of hot topics, i.e. if Oprah is talking about health care and you have a health care ebook, then promote Oprah's page in health care THEN use something like Magic List Builder to put a popup on the target web page. That is how you use Twitter in my opinion.

I still think Twitter is good for promotion, but as you guys have said, it's spammers promoting to spammers for the most part.

The best use of Twitter now in my opinion is branding, and getting eyeballs on your site. If you want to sell things directly on Twitter you're going to have a struggle. Certain products can be sold directly but for the most part it's very hard to sell there.

However, Twitter is still very useful for:
      • Bloggers
      • DJs
      • Artists
      • Musicians
      • Comedians
      • Celebrities
      • Comedians
      • Viral Videos
      • Gossip Sites

And similar. To answer the original question, I think affiliate marketing on Twitter is either going to be very difficult, or a waste of time. However if you want to build up a fanbase for a site, and try to sell things on that site, you can get some indirect benefit from Twitter.

Even though I sell a Twitter marketing product, I have to be honest with people and tell them that direct sales on Twitter is becoming harder by the day.

  • I agree with most of whats being said above. Don't treat Twitter as a direct sales machine. Its almost like a party or a hang out place where people come to socialize and get to know others and sometimes even listen to what people have to say. You can tell others who you are and what you do but you are better off not directly pitching or selling to them. Focus on providing valuable content and interact with your followers when you can.

Twitter can be a very powerful source of free traffic to your websites or blogs. If you have compelling content there, then you may be able to even generate leads or sales from visitors that find you on Twitter. This holds good whether you are selling you own products or just promoting offers as an affiliate.

The best way to avoid SPAM on Twitter is to just not follow the SPAMmers.

I have come to feel that most Tweeps with waaayyy too many followers are either Ashton Kutcher (etc) or flogging useless IM & Clickbank pitches mixed with comments about the weather, Shakespearean type quotes, or telling us how great they are at social media. So yes, that leads to poor conversion and an utter waste of time.

Think about it, is anybody (other than a public figure) really so popular as to have 40,000+ followers? It just doesn't make sense and you KNOW those followers are just bouncing SPAM of each other.

However, I have found Twitter an excellent resource for any type of software I might be using and need help where you can find the programmers faster than submitting a ticket, and even better sometimes > the evangelists who are more than willing to share their expertise with you.

If you really want to market something on Twitter I would become VERY familiar with the product and offer videos, articles and tips on that very item you are affiliated with. In other words, be genuinely helpful and good things can, and will come via Twitter. Just do not worry about how many followers you have, instead do #hashtag searches and respond to people in need where you think you can help.
