How to build a quality, responsive list without using an autoresponder.

Unfortunately, this post is not a "how to" but a newbie (me, as usual) looking for advice (again).

I had an idea in my head that I couldn't quite get rid of (ever had one of those?). So, I'm asking you all a question to find out if I am crazy or not.

So for my first internet marketing project, I want to find out how to build a list. But there is one thing I am very curious of; Do I need an autoresponder? Is it possible to build a list without an autoresponder? My instincts tell me that if I do not rely on a "robot," I may be able to separate myself from the crowd and make my subscribers a little more happier than usual by providing a more intimate and real relationship.

Granted the obvious drawback is probably that it would be hard to manage a larger list, but I guess I want to know, is it possible at all to build a list without an autoresponder or is my idea "dead on arrival?"

As always, Much thanks for all your replies in advance

JD

PS: I eventually do want to learn how to use an autoresponder anyways, in case you are wondering if I'm just trying to get around it.

While I applaud the thinking behind this notion. I think you'd find the execution a real pain.

For example, once I had a problem with a WSO I ran, I forgot something in the files. I went to bed and didn't realize it until the following day. Well, overnight, I had got a significant amount of orders. I wasn't using an auto-responder. So, I had to by hand, email everyone the update. It was very time consuming, tedious, and no fun.

    No, I wouldn't suggest it.

Edit: I just also wanted to add, that's why you have to rely on good copy. If you have good copywriting skills, or learn them, you will be able to make people think it is personal, just for them.

I agree with what Jason says. Although it's a novel idea, I just don't think it's very realistic.
