If I make a page, should I reserve .net .org .us. com etc?

Hello,

I have a couple of questions:

When I start a project I'm going to be dumping quite a bit of money into, is it worth it to purchase all of the extensions along with the main domain?

for example:

If I'm making a site called theexample.com should I purchase the domian names theexample.org theexample.net theexample.us etc? Also, should I purchase the domain The-example.com The-example.org The-example.us etc etc?

My other question is, if I find a domain that I like and the name is wide open (I have the option for .com .us .org. .net etc) which is the most sought after and will be typed in the most?

Thanks, I hope I was clear

  • If you have the money to spend then it is a good idea, especially if you are trying to establish or preserve a brand name.

As for your second question .com is the winner by a landslide!

  • I have never done that but it can be a good idea.

    • Shoemoney didn't and got burned.

It was a Twitter-related service, and the person who owned the .net was spammer, which got him associated with it.
  • I think it depends on the competition. If .com, .org, and .net are available there is obviously not very much competition in your niche. If that is the case it may be a waste buying all of those extensions.

If you think your niche is soon to be popular I would take all three if you have the money. Never hurts to eliminate potential competition.
  • I don't think it matters, I've gone to countless sites that have extenstions .net, .org, .info, whatever

When I have a valuable site, I register the .com, .net, .org and .info ... I don't bother with the rest.
