Qestion for the "Offline" Experts

Hey guys and gals,

I got a quick question for those of you with experience
in the offline marketing area... as in doing online stuff
for local businesses.

Up until now all I have done is SEO, but I met with a
client the other day and we were talking about how they
could expand and do more online.

I see them having an email list as being one of the best
areas that they could increase their revenue online and
so I told them my ideas for what they could do if they
started collecting opt-ins.

They loved the idea and want to do it.

Now I am trying to figure out the best way to do it.

I could just set them up with their list and charge a one
time fee.

Or I could set it up and manage it for them and charge
an ongoing fee.

Do you have experience with this situation?

Any suggestions of which method you prefer? Or even
another idea that I didn't list above?

Thanks in advance!
Matt

Yes we do this for our clients. I usually set them up an aweber account and manage it for them for an ongoing quarterly fee.

Give your client(s) the choice. Some can't bear the thought of managing a list, others are keen to learn and run their sites and everything associated with it for themselves.

The ones who want to run sites themselves won't be lost as your clients - every time they have a question or need help they will contact you - but they won't feel that they are being "forced" to pay for a service(s) they don't want.

      Happy clients are loyal clients.

This sounds like a good idea for a WSO: How to Set Up and Manage Opt-In Lists and Programs for Local Businesses. I'd buy it. (What's that you're saying? Why don't I create it? Darn! If only I had the experience!)

I would say go ahead and manage it for them for a couple of reasons:

    1) On going relationship with the client in where he will get to know you more over time
    2) Possible more upsales later on in the relationship after more trust is built
    3) More hooks into his relationship with you in which it will cost him more to leave you if there are more hooks (I'm sure you catch my drift on what I mean here).

    Success to you,

Email Lists are great for local businesses to keep in touch with their current customers and to get them back into the store.

However, what local businesses need in this economy is more customers. Sure some of their customers my forward the email to their friends but this is not the most effective method today for getting new customers for local businesses.

For that you also need to offer services to get them a Local Business Listing, IYPs, Local Business Directories, so that they come up in Google Maps. Then create videos, blog post, social media pages, articles, etc to help them dominate natural searches for the area.

This is all more effective for getting new customers. Then once they come into the store get them on the email list to keep the business name at the top of their minds.

Offer the monthly with option to transfer list if don't continue with you. Then work on direct response offers for some type of freebie report/offer to target interested leads then hit them with your offer after they have got your freebies and or if did it right they call you after you send free offer.

I do a lot more initial online lead generation method and then take them online to offline to get better conversions.

I agree with Brad, I work mostly offline with small biz-owners, and your average biz-owner has no time or patience for maintaining an email list.

what they want is more enquiries.

ok, if you can directly translate the goodwill and the referrals generated by having a warm relationship with a list into cold hard cash, then they might be willing to listen. But for the majority that's 3 steps beyond their current thinking.
then again, if you find someone who would like to use it but just lacks the tools, then you have a good case....

Aweber it, charge monthly maintenance, AND pre-write the first ten email messages to give them an idea and charge them for the whole package. They'll love you AND gladly pay you for that!

      Jimian,

Yes, some are anxious to hand over their money. Until they see that your effort, by itself, starts generating some serious coin.

What do you charge for "the whole package"?

        Greff,

It depends... if that's all they want and I touch nothing else... $400-475 initial and $75/mnth... but every single situation is different... different client personalities... some want a hand in it, others don't want to touch it. Some have webmasters that they only trust. Then I gotta bargain with him or her.

I am also in SEO. I figure list building is part of the real meat of SEO so I help people make that happen.

But you will find they are not too anxious to put in the time needed to make it happen. There is no way they can afford to let you do it. How much is 20 hours a week of your time worth?
