Just a bit of newbie advice...

Every time I see a trend start showing up in my inbox, I feel like it's time to revisit some of the facts of IM for people who might be just starting out. With that in mind, if you are new to IM, here are just a couple things to keep in the back of your head as you navigate forums, buy products and make a go at this whole internet business thang...

1. That ebook or video course isn't doing anyone any good sitting on your hard drive. It's not going to help you unless you take action on it. Overwhelmed with that? What's the very first thing it instructs you to do? Now, do that one thing and put it away. Few hours later, even the next day, what's the next thing it tells you to do? Do that. Repeat this until you've taken a bunch of little bite-sized chunks of action. It all adds up you know. Before you know it, you've completed whatever it is and ZOMG it wasn't that big of a deal!

2. Are you afraid you're going to fail at making a new site/doing niche research/finding good keywords/trying a new campaign? Fill in your own blank. And then get over it, because you will be failing. A LOT. And that's no biggie because in the LARGER SCHEME OF THINGS you can't succeed until you fail. But for one day, try to replace the word "fail" with "learn". Did you fail today? Or did you learn today? They are simply two different perspectives on the same thing. Get it?

3. Decide that you will learn one technique. Then put those blinders on and focus on that one technique and that technique ONLY. Once you have started making money with THAT technique, you might be ready to tackle another technique. But NOT before you start making money at it. If you stop and start and stop and start a bunch of different techniques, you're not marketing, you're not learning, you're simply floundering around. Nobody wins when they try this. So knowing that, just knock it off and concentrate on ONE thing.

Welp, those are the three big ones I'm seeing right now.

Hope that helps some of you!

If you would've read my entire post, you would know that I'm telling people to only learn one technique at a time.

Creating drama? Spamming myself? (How does one spam themself?) Self-promote?

          Lisa,

I agree with your points and I definitely was a poster boy of what NOT to do in IM.

I used to start a website or create a product to sell and have all kinds of high hopes. But if I didn't get instant results with visitors or sales, I would think I did something wrong and go onto something else. I never followed through with proper marketing and more imporantly, time and patience. I was never focused on one task, or did one step at a time.

WF has definitely changed that for me and I hope your post will help other newbies that are like I used to be.

    Hi Lisa,

I'm brand new to the forum. First post ever.

You're tips certainly make a lot of sense to me. All last year my average income was barely $200 per month from IM. Simply because I was trying to find that "top secret method" etc.

Once I figured out what I was good at, I stuck to it, and expanded on that one strategy. I just hit 2k last month.

I'm still learning, but I think the difference between a Newbie and an intermediate is patience and persistence.

I hope they sticky this post. It's a good one. Thanks.

There just ain't no top secret anything, right? But we alllll had to figure that out! It's just persistence and hard work, that's what gets it done.

I was talking to some friends on Skype the other day and I said, "The day I stop learning, I better just be dead." :p

Great advice. The simplicity of your statements speak true. I especially agree with #2. Failure can be seen as a synonym for learning.

And I agree you are not spamming anything. It is easy to get caught up in the hundreds of different ways to approach internet marketing and get lost in all of them. One step at a time is great advice.

See, it's all in the mindset...everytime I do something that flops, I have to think of it like I just learned how something won't work as opposed to "wow, that sucked, I must suck too." LOL

Kim: Lisa is saying learn one technique FULLY, then APPLY it. THEN learn another...and another...she is saying that focus is the key. This is something that people new to IM commonly lack, either out of fear of "taking too long" or they want to do it all at one time. Lisa has given much to this forum in terms of free and usable advice. She is not spamming. You're new here, be respectful and learn a bit. Contribute intelligently...ask questions...but don't come in blasting senior members, you never know they may one day be your client.

All to often I have watched friends associates who want to start making money online, go out buy this that and the other item online. Pretending to be a marketer or internet business owner. But not do a D*mn thing.

Then look at me and have the audacity to ask, "Are all of these people online scammers? "Isn't there anything real that "I" can do to make money online?"

I'll give them a book to read, and tell them to talk with me when they are done. Two months later... I ask them did you finish that book? Their response... a sheepish no filled with excuses or arrogance of they knew that stuff already..

Sadly, the reality of it all is, many people want this that or the other, but a majority of them have a hard time breaking out of their current mind set/ paradigm. So when confronted with something that shows them a little hope they buy it, eat it up for a day or two feel better about themselves and go back to their old routine.

Quite often it's not fear of failure... it's a fear of success. What would they have to complain about...

All that aside for any of you "newbies" and to many of us average Joe's... if I can share with you just one piece of advice, regardless of your knowledge, and experience level.
    My motto:
"ACT, Do Something even if you can only do a little, Do it, Move toward your dreams, toward your goals. And one day, you may realize your dreams have come true"

    Have a wonderful day

That's good advice Lisa. I'm fairly new to IM in general and that's one of my bigger problems. I'm a bright, shiny object type of guy.

Also I have a few other suggestions for people who may have trouble staying focused on one thing.

    1. Work in a blank space. I sit in front of a wall with nothing on it just so I don't get distracted.
    2. Disconnect the internet. It's way too easy to check your email constantly, read reviews, etc. If you disconnect you'll be much less likely to do those things. (You can even take it a step further and grab a pen and notebook and just start writing on that instead)
    3. Listen to instrumental music. If you're one of those people who hates the total silence instrumental music usually works well and you don't have to worry about the temptation of singing along and then losing your train of thought.

Oh man, you know what? Your post totally reminded me of a couple of websites that I know of where you can actually program in how much time you're "allowed" to spend on sites of your choosing. It's in a book at home but I'll try to remember to post them later on when I get home.

Thanx for the advice Lisa. I know that point #3 is one that i definitely battle with almost all the time.

Jumping from idea to idea, ebook to ebook is certainly not the way to go. But thankfully ive found a clearer path to follow and so far its coming alright.

As a newbie, you expect everything to happen so fast and to be a millionaire over night. But im learning Patience, Perseverance and Smart Work is the key.

Great post, Lisa. I could add my own comments about each point you made, but you made your points so well I don't think my comments would add that much value, so I only offer you my kudos.

I was fortunate. I spent my last dime and actually it was part of my rent money, back in 98/99 buying a Printed Internet Marketing Course. Back then you had to get it mailed to you, you would have never been able to download that much information on your hard-drive lol.

I wish I still had those printed binders. Still to this day I still consider that information to be the core of all IM. Yeah sure methods and technology have changed but the essence is the same ... you sell to people not computers. you sell to individuals not groups... target the group sell the individual. Know your target audience... market accordingly

I have since then bought maybe 20 more products and have yet to find anything to compare... not knocking any of the IM material out there for what those products are they were good, they did the job.

One of them had some much hype and mystery around it, I bought just to find out what it was all about ... yeah I felt like a dumb ass... almost requested a return. but I learned something from that fella ... how to sell on mystery and hype alone. I ended up giving that product to my daughters they are making a little spending money each week so yeah ...
IM is so simple a 10 year old can do it....

    Nice post Lisa.

I find as I get older, the thought of failing becomes more ominous. I'm sure it has something to do with the days and weeks slipping by faster and faster.

But I try to keep it in the realm of a philosophical exercise. I take the following quotes to heart:

"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." - Thomas Edison

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm." -Winston Churchill
