Article Back Linking Question

If you take one article, and submit it to several article directories, for a back link to one site, does google devalue the back links because it sees the article is the same, or duplicate content?

I know the article directories don't pick up on it, because I have done it several times, but have heard recently, google may not give much weight to the links, because of the duplicate content.

I have been with article marketer for a few years, which is now crooner, and they submit one article to hundreds of sites. I know I could spin it, but would prefer not to. Just wondering.

Thanks Glenn

I have studied articles which have the direct backlinks (without any spinning) like you have mentioned.

These articles are #1 in their niches, have well over 1 Million views, and have not been flagged or removed by the search engines yet, even after years (in some cases)! But these articles also had about 50+ back links to them, so for some that is some heavy back-linking.

You should also remember that article directories allow people to publish your articles, BUT they must publish it in its entirety with your resource box in tact. So this is WELCOME, and article directories have been doing this the entire time, and the search engines are aware of it too, and that hasn't stopped the search engines from making/recognizing those websites as legitimate websites either, has it?

Now you might get people coming in here telling you to change the article a little bit, because that may produce faster results with the search engines and will help you achieve what you are trying to achieve better, but the fact is that people have also NOT done the above, and have still ranked just fine and then some. I think it boils down to a personal preference, and how much work you want to do here.

Oh and the duplicate content idea, is a myth. Especially when it comes to google, because as mentioned, TONS of these article directories all have the same articles, but you don't see their page ranks going down. Instead you see the page rank increasing, and you also see these article directories ranking with single articles in various search results. So that's a BIG fat myth. But you might get people coming in here arguing that as well.

So as mentioned, it basically boils down to how much work you want to do, and how fast you want the results...that's the only difference between the methods.

Its not the amount of places your article is published, Glenn.

It's where the articles are published.

If you are getting your articles published at low-rate, bottom-feeding, unkept article directories, then you're spinning your wheels.

Its not the "duplicate content penalty" (because there's no such thing) - its the sites where your backlinks are sitting (and a few other factors) which determine the "weight" you get from the SEs.
