    I think more importantly, does "competing web pages" have anything to do with how you can rank for that keyword?

    If a keyword has 1,000,000 competing web pages, but everyone on page one is PR 0 or -, and no back links, and little on page SEO, then that's still an easy keyword to rank for, right?

    But I've run into the same thing you put in your question...I don't know! But I think the STRENGTH of the web pages is more important.
