Running a Competition...?

So to liven up activity and bring more attention to one of my blogs, I was thinking about launching a competition. One of my products plus some cool bonuses for free for the best themed youtube video that links back to my site, or something like that.

When Jeff Johnson (I think it was him, all these IM legends have worryingly similar names, but he's the one who talks very fast) recommended a competition for traffic getting, he said 'ask your lawyer first' about 17 times.
Is that really necessary?

Also, it would be a bit disastrous if I posted the competition to all my blogs, sites, lists and got all my JV partners to promote... and nothing happened?

I guess I need tips on structuring a competition for the best results, motivating JVs to get involved, giving out cool prizes, and utilizing it to build traffic and sales.

  • First of all you have to get everything organized, without leaving anything to luck, then, it wouldn't hurt to check with a lawyer before you implement it, although most competitions from bloggers and non-official usually are never contemplated by the law.

    To generate traffic, is a creative and effective way if you use it properly.

      A lot for your answer.

      I would imagine (/hope) that a casual competition would not be viewed as a legal contract, but I also realize why no one would feel comfortable giving legal advice here.

      What about the actual implementation of the competition?
      Any tips much apreciated

    So you're absolutely clear on the issue: even a casual competition is a contract. You run any competition - it's a contract.

    I saw the same thing from Jeff Johnson and as result added a legal guide to the Internet Marketing Law Center discussing contests, sweepstakes, and lotteries - for online marketing generally and with specific tips for affiliate competitions JJ mentioned.

    It's not just the contractual issues if someone gets upset. The legal consequences can be surprisingly severe if you don't do it right.
