Social Media Marketing: Is it really clever to connect with "gurus"?

Social media has created a big buzz and looks like it will continue to do so for the unforseeable future.

Question however is, is it really clever to add gurus as friends on FB, become a "gurus"'s fan again on FB and follow a "guru" on Twitter?

I have got my reservations about it, what's your say?

Depends If the Guru is also your competition or not,
or if the Guru is a generic internet Marketeer.
A better question would be does his information add massive value to your network?

Most 'Gurus' don't spend the time on these social sites... I would say the chances of you getting to know them are pretty low and it's not worth your time

You'd be better off leaving a bunch of good comments on their blog

I meet bigger marketers than me on Skype groups... but I also have a decent sized list, that helps

Some of them are realising the importance of spending time on these networks Ray, they see it as an opportunity to answer their fans's questions in real time while they give value at the same time.I see them all the time.

I haven't got a problem with leaving good comments on their blogs as such,I respect them, they do a fantastic job.
