It's all about relationships.

If you can make friends with someone with a small list and if you can get him to do promotions for you then you can get starting building a list.

That's how I started actually. I befriended this guy at a forum and he had a list of 3000 people in IM niche and I asked him if he can add my link to his newsletter and he did and that's what got my ball rolling.

Remember, don't be scared to ask. The worst they can tell you is no and I don't think it's that bad

That's easy. Grab yourself an IM product that comes with master resale rights and giveaway rights and use that as bait to get folks opted in to your list. Just take the index file that comes with the product and convert it to a squeeze page. Which means you: 1) replace the "order now" button with your autoresponder form, 2) Add "free eBook alert" at the top of the page to let everyone know it's a giveaway offer, 3) Remove all testimonials and guarantees.

I have been doing this for a few years now and these modified squeezes bring in a 40 - 60% conversion rate consistently.

To get traffic to the squeeze you can: 1) create a wso for it, 2) Your siggy line here at WF, 3) Your Twitter followers, 4) ad swaps etc.

Excellent advice here except for one thing. You cannot use anything that you have not created or caused to be created in a WSO. You could use it as a bonus, when you sell something else as a wso though.

You ca also try blog commenting or guest blogging. These two are a good way to leverage others traffic for your benefit. If your posting is good and you have a decent copy on the squeeze page, you'll be able to reach your initial target of 200-300 subscribers fairly quickly.

I've been thinking about sending some PPV traffic to an opt in page. PPV is cheap traffic costing about $0.01 per view, so you spend only $10 getting 1,000 views to your opt in. Assuming the worst, your opt in page converts badly at 10%, that's still pretty darn good ...100 opt-ins!!! I know getting 1,000 views a day might sound impossible but when I did PPV previously, I bid on this targeted dating site that had 1000s of views daily but I couldn't get it to convert somehow on the front-end. Maybe it's time to collect opt-ins off that traffic to make $$$ off the back-end

Also, to add on to what has already been mentioned, I think having a well-written signature is the most overlooked way of getting traffic. People do read your signature & they do click it. I cant believe how many potential subscribers I missed out on by not having a signature previously.

Hey Sean,

If you want to build a list in the IM niche fast here's what you can do...

Create a good product, that you know you can easily sell for $77 or $97 then contact people that you know have a good list and tell them that if they sell your product they keep 100% profit.

Explain that you are doing this because you are relatively new and you want to build a good list.

It works like a charm, I suggest you give it a try.

That is actually some really good advice. And because you probably know more about PPC than most marketers (building a list of 20,000 is impressive), your product could be about PPC.

Hey Sean,

I was just wondering if you were already monetizing the list of 20,000 subs you built?

I mean with that many people in any niche you should be able to make some kind of money off of that list, if it is somewhat targeted.

I'm not sure how much experience you have in IM, but from the looks of you sig your ahead of the curve by far.

Realize that you could be sitting on a gold mine if you are not making money of the list you have already built. It all really comes down to how well you understand the marketing craft.

Anyways.. i dont know what you are doing with that list and i was just curious to find out if you were utilizing your existing resources.

But if you really do want to venture into the IM niche, i recommend solo ad buys to get started then get into adswaps. IMHO, Aside from PPC thats the best method to start building a list from scratch.

There was a post from Gavin S. i believe where he talked about this strategy and how he built a list and made an upfront profit in 11 days. just search and you shall find.. later ;]

Join the war room.
Create A list building with PPC product. Sell it on Warrior Forum and at the same time partner with a ten JV's from the Warrior Forum.
Offer them a 75% commission.
Within a few weeks, you'll have a list of thousand buyers.

And then you can do what you want to do...

This is obvious, but give away valuable information for cheap or free.

Provide short, valuable reports to people in exchange for opting in. Be it a pdf, video or audio report.

If you have any software knowledge, code a simple script or program that may be valuable to someone in exchange for an optin.

It's all about ethically "bribing" people to opt in really. If you have something of true value to offer people will opt in willingly.

The other question is, where do you get your traffic? You can start right here; Offering cheap but high quality reports in exchange for optins.

Acquire several PLR ebooks on same subject within IM niche
and then combine them into one good ebook, adding a little
of your own content. Create new graphics (it's cheap) and
you have your own product. Create a squeeze page.

Repeat the process untill you have 3-4 ebooks with you name
as the outhor that you can give away.

In each ebook place the links to other ebooks' squeeze pages.

Register at freeEbooks.net and pay them $97 to include your
ebook in their newsletter that goes to 500 000 readers.

People will download your free ebook and click the links
to your squeeze pages. They will need to optin in order to
get them.

Try and get onto some thank you pages with your free report/download. Signature links work very well too.

The fastest way of course: Create a course in the IM niche.
Have you seen the big launches lately?
You get tons of JV's to mail for you on prelaunch.
Prelaunch takes them to a video optin - Then even more people mail for you on launch day.

Take Google Sniper for example - George Brown launched a hot wso for testing purposes I think, then probably sent conversion data and made connections to some heavy hitting JV's and wallah, come prelaunch, they all mail their lists and effectively give their list away to the product launch owners optin page. Of course, they also make a ton of money come launch day. And you better have quality tracking and cookies if you want JV's to mail to an optin page.

Frank Kern's List control worked in a similar way.
