What Warriors Here Are NOT Building a List

Hey guys,

I'm sure you've all heard it a million times, it's like the IM mantra. Say it with me now..."the money is in the list." For years I heard this and "knew" that it was true, but I guess I just didn't believe it. So I never worked very hard to build a list.

Now though, my mindset has completely changed. Everything I do is focused around building my list. The way I see it, my list is the most powerful asset I have as an online business owner.

I know some others see it differently though. Are there Warriors on here who purposefully don't build a list? I'd love to hear why.

And even more interesting to me is, if you are newer or have been around awhile and aren't building a list, WHY NOT? Is there a big, underlying reason that you haven't decided to buy an autoresponder yet and start building?

Is it because of technical stuff, setting all the pages up, delivering a product, using an autoresponder?

Or is it more focused on not thinking you can provide and deliver value to anyone?

Because I got my start in the adult industry, e-mail was a dirty word :-)

Took me a long time to get my head around building a list and providing them with value. I just started with list building in December :-)

Hi Tyson, I personally have not started list building yet but will be shortly. The reason I didn't get to it sooner is because I was unsure as to how I could help people. Basically I didn't have anything useful to offer them. Now I know that I can help people after having created my first online product to rave reviews.
I guess my inability to take action sooner was due to lack of confidence in myself and my work.
But I'd really like to begin list building right away. Right away as in..right now. So if you're available for consultation at any time, do let me know. Maybe you can kick my butt and get me in gear at the same time.

      Hey Hanz,

I can totally relate to that, it took me a looong time to finally get serious about IM and start building a business instead of just trying to make money. In fact, I actually just officially started about a month ago. So I'm not too far ahead of you (if at all).

I was always looking for the quick income instead of focusing on building up 1 subscriber at a time. Now my mindset has changed and I'm really looking forward to growing and expanding my product line and business. So maybe we could help each other stay motivated =)

I keep thinking that I should but I haven't wanted to go down that route again. I did that with direct mail 10 years ago and although quite successfully I had enough of jumping on to the latest thing to mail my list with. I also rarely open the emails that I get and often unsubscribe if I do open them so there is a bit of discomfort for me. I have got some feedburner lists which I feel more comfortable with.

I have a micro niche site that is pulling in over 2000 visitors one day of the week and 400 every other day but not making much money. I know that I need to monetise it better, get my own product and probably build a list but I'm a bit uncertain what to do for the best.

I built a list once...I had no idea what I was doing. Now, list building doesn't fit my business model, so I stopped.

I do intend on starting over again though

I have one great list. But I am not planning to do anymore.

I prefer to make money in ways that do not involve me working with a list.

Sure I send out a newsletter to them and make affiliate sales but that involves some work.

Once you can make money without a list then why wouldn't you do that.
So for the moment list building is bottom of my list.

    Hey Tyson,

I'm in the boat of trying to build an IM list from scratch. I have a pretty substantial list for my Guitar product, but this IM niche thing is a whole new animal.

The Guitar list hasn't been super responsive, but maybe that's the nature of the market. So it kind of turned me off to the whole "list" idea for a while while I just created blogs in targeted niches.

But I want to stick with trying to build a list and utilizing it correctly until it works...cause it works, right??

Of course it works! It's just focusing on it and building it slowly that's the difficult part.

I think the most important thing to remember too is that you're building a list of PEOPLE. They deserve respect and to be treated well. It's not just a bunch of numbers.

As such I don't send many affiliate offers because I only recommend things that I have used or reviewed and know will help them too.

i think building a list is vital. Unlike some marketers i feel you need to provide quality content in each email.

I can only speak from experinece (and if you can relate, feel free to speak
up -- although I know many of you would never admit it on this forum)

    1. I had lack of patience.

one reason most newbies refuse to build a list is because they want to
make money as soon as...NOW! Not 1 week from now, or 30 days from
    now with one mailing...right...now.

    2. I had fear of not being accepted

The truth is that when you build a list first, you have to face the fact
that you will NOT convert every person on the list. You have to deal
with knowing that you will get unsubscribes for whatever reason, and
it's like a blow to the heart.

    It's a fear...of rejection.

    3. I didn't believe I had anything of value to give

Everyone has something of value to offer, but the problem is that
many of us don't BELIEVE in the value we can offer. Therefore,
we ASSUME our efforts would be wasted and we would have...

better luck getting the one-time sale...that way at LEAST I can
get the quick transaction and move on to the next person so they
won't see the lack of confidence I have over a period of time.

Again, this is honestly based on how I really felt and why building
a list was at the bottom of the list (now #1 on the top).

I get why and how the list building works in IM. I'm struggling to make it work in one of my dropship product sites. I do pretty well on the site but basically the people come there because they are shopping for a specific type of item, they shop, price it whatever and eventually buy or don't buy. I just can't find a good hook to even get them want to sign up. I've tried several angles but nothing's worked well so far.
