Banner Ads - Secrets?

Hey
I have been using Banner Ads for a while on one of my blogs, yet despite reasonable traffic (250 unique a day) i'd be lucky to get 5 or 6 clicks.

These banners are usually for affiliate products, so naturally they aren't being that profitable.

How do we get people clicking our banners, and what tips do you have for successful banner marketing?

Cheers,
Nathan

Are the banners them selves attractive, and have good sales copy on them? This has a big impact on them

    Hi Nathan,

    Key points

    1. Where are the banners placed? You get good traffic so you can effectively test the best location
    2. Like "innocent07" said, are the banners themselves attractive or click friendly?
    3. Does the banner offer any benefit to a visitor. How targeted is it? Eg. If your website is about jokes or something and you are promoting weight loss then you are going to get a low conversion rate.
    4. Also you may like to look at the overall layout of your site? Perhaps you have too many banners or too many other images that draw the eye

I was going to chime in here and leave my 2 cents but Christian took the words right out of my mouth.

    Great response, Christian.

    Thanks guys!
    My blog is here: http://keystothemind.com

I had larger banners originally, but am using the smaller ones to make it look a little neater. No increase in click through.

Maybe more images could work? and perhaps a focus on one or two only?

I took a peek at the blog. The first thing that hits me (as in "assault") is the one-two punch from a footer ad popping up while a subscription form slides in. I haven't read two words on the actual blog and I'm already distracted and mildly annoyed. I'd start by picking one or the other, and lean toward the footer ad.

The banners in the left column are a serious snooze. If I hadn't gone to the blog with the intention of looking at the banners, I wouldn't have noticed them at all.

The two approaches I've seen that seem to work are to either blend the ads right into the navigation or to really stick out and grab their eyeballs. The middle ground is boring, and as you've already seen, ineffective.

Agreed with John - the initial punch in the face makes me want to hit the little "X" on my browser's tab.

Also, he's right on about the banners on the left side - no offense, but they are extremely hard to read and look like bad clip-art.

Your layout is very narrow (I understand there are those that say it keeps the reader focused) but with about 1/3 of your space eaten up with the non-effective banners and the busy background, it makes the site difficult to look at. Again, no malice here, these are observations meant with good intentions. :-)

        Hope it helps.

    Thanks John, Gary.

I've removed the slide over form, so hopefully that should help, and updated the banner somewhat.

That has been the blogs theme or layout for a while, changing it is an option, but I'm not sure if my readers would appreciate it?

    Thanks again for the tips!
    Cheers,
    Nathan
