Newbie Tips: How To Write An Ebook Or Book

Dear newbies,

I see that most newbies start out by trying to make their first dollar online through affiliate marketing (on Clickbank in particular).

Yes, affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online and most of the "guru systems" teach newbies to start that way. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

However, as a newbie you could be in for quite a bit of disappointment. Clickbank is where all the savvy top-name internet marketers are and the competition is extremely fierce. It can take a while before you see that first dollar appear in your account.

I believe a better alternative is just to create your own product. Yes, newbies- you heard me right.

The easiest way is write a physical book and publish it on Amazon (through services like CreateSpace.com or Lulu.com). You could also write an ebook and publish it on Kindle.

Here are some tips for how to do that:

1. Find Your Passion

Write about a subject that interests you. This way it's much easier to get ideas and have lots of things to say.

2. Find A Hot Topic

Research Amazon and see what's hot and what's not. It's better to write about evergreen topics that will always be popular rather than a passing fad which is here and gone tomorrow.

Popular topics usually revolve around Health, Wealth and Love.

3. Use An Ebook Template

You don't have to worry about formatting and all those technical stuff by using a good template to paste in your text. Your book will still come out looking extremely nice and professional.

I like all the ebook templates by Tracy Yates (a fellow warrior here).

This works even for books that you want to publish as a physical book.

4. Create A Clickable Table Of Contents For Ebooks

I've read so many ebooks that don't have this feature even though it is very easy to do and will help your readers tremendously to navigate through the pages.

Just use the heading styles such as H1, H2, H3, Body Text for all your headings and sub-headings when you are editing in Word or OpenOffice Writer.

Then when you publish it as a PDF, you will automatically get this Table Of Contents (also called Bookmarks).

5. Add Pictures And Clipart

"A picture paints a thousand words" so always add in lots of relevant pictures, clipart or diagrams to explain your ideas clearly.

6. Add A Resource Area

Add a resource area at the end of your book to help your readers further. If you are publishing a physical book, you can set up a companion website where the readers can register for free stuff, downloads, etc. (Hint: build a list).

For ebooks, you can even put links to suitable affiliate programs or your squeeze page. However, be careful not to overdo this. You don't want your book to be just a showcase of affiliate links.

7. Make A Professional Book Cover/ Ecover

People do judge a book by its cover... so make sure you make it a killer cover! Get a professional designer to do it if you're not good with design. Don't skimp on this because just this alone can make or break your book's success.

8. Have Fun!

Don't treat this as a chore or think it's difficult. It's not rocket science. Writing is a big part of internet marketing so you might as well practise and get good at it.

Once you publish your first book, you'll be looking forward to writing your second one.

Okay, that's it for my tips. Sorry that this has turned into a super long post.

Writing a book or ebook is a great first project because it can generate continuous residual income. "Write once- earn forever".

To Your Success,
Alex

I read somewhere that just 100 words a day will create a full book in less than a year!

Great advice - the industry needs more creative contribution. Unfortunately, writing a book does take some dedication.

Maybe someone could set up a marketplace where you can buy all the 000s of half finished ebooks that people started to write but lost focus :-)

Taking up to a year for one book may be a bit too long and you might lose momentum half way.

As another person suggested, it's good to set a daily goal of a certain number of chapters or pages. Once you get started, you'll experience bursts of inspiration and sometimes you might even write more than your daily goal.

Besides, you don't need to write a literary masterpiece spanning several hundred pages. A paperback book of 50 - 100 pages is good enough for a first project.

      Regards,
      Alex

Absolutely those are great tips. I would like to add just make a goal or dedication to x amount of pages or x chapters every day or other day or what you set up. This way you can continue to stay on track. It's amazing how many people I speak to started a book but never finished.

Just keep moving forward and go back and edit as well I would suggest because if you edit every little thing as you go you will loose your momentum and vibe. This helped me greatly for my new book.

Thanks for the great additional tip.

A great copywriter for internet marketing sales letters has a really innovative method to make sure he always finishes his letters well:

He writes the Headline at the top and then immediately goes down to write the Closing where he asks for the sale. Then he fills in the body of the letter with all the supporting points.

You can write your book in the same way. Write the first chapter. Then the last chapter. Finally fill in the remaining middle chapters. This way you'll start and end strong and will find it much easier to complete the entire book.

      Regards,
      Alex

    Good advice.

I'm not completely sure about the images tip though. They're great in some cases, but I've just finished my latest book and there are no images in it. Maybe I got it wrong though.

Thanks for sharing your advice though, it seems sound.

      Hi Andy,

In my tips I was referring more to non-fiction How-To books where you need to explain certain steps. In that case, a lot of screenshots or illustrations can make it easy for the reader to learn the complicated procedures.

If you're writing fiction, stories or novels for adults, you don't need pictures because you're relying on the reader's imagination to transport himself or herself into your story.

      Regards,
      Alex

Hehe - that would be perfect if my book was fiction, story or novel - which it isn't.

I guess there's always an exception to most rules.

      Hi,

I'm currently earning income from affiliate marketing and Adsense through article writing and websites that I've set up. I'm just getting into Amazon and Kindle publishing. I'm also working hard on a membership site that I'm launching soon.

I started internet marketing the hard way and wished that I've started this sooner. However, back then in the 90's self-publishing wasn't as straight-forward and there weren't any sites that offer publishing-on-demand services like we have now.

The tips that I'm sharing here are based on my experience of writing short stories and articles for friends and other publications since I was a teenager. I've always loved writing and most of the time it was for personal enjoyment rather than monetary gain.

However now with the wide acceptance of Amazon Kindle, I feel that the time is ripe to take advantage of self-publishing in a big way.

      Regards,
      Alex

        beautifully said.

not to mention the ease of print on demand services now days. almost anyone can publish something, physical or digital, if they put their mind to it. something that could not have been said a few years ago
